I wonder if part of this comes from the Academy, and maybe part from the specific movies that are big box office hits? Blockbuster movies that were Best Picture winners in the more distant past (Ben-Hur, Titanic, Gladiator, etc.) seemingly did more from the Academy's point of view to blend art...
In terms of movies getting shut out, it's obvious but true that they will always have the honor of being nominated in various categories. I appreciate how RAH, in his blu-ray reviews, almost always mentions the nominations for various movies from the past. To some degree it's a roulette wheel...
Till is obviously a movie that's difficult to watch, and the advance trailer for it made that very clear. Few people saw the movie, reflected in the box office for it, which so far has been about $10 million. Compare that, for instance, to the $22 million so far for Spielberg's box office...

I still need to see the new production of All Quiet on the Western Front. I've been putting it off, because of the grim subject, but I think I'll give it a try.
