Here we are seven years after this note from RAH, and we still don't have a remaster of The Searchers or the other VistaVision titles with botched blu-rays (The Man Who Knew Too Much, etc.).
Plus imho blu-rays would be nice for Artists and Models (and maybe some of the other Dean Martin and...
Reviving this thread from the dead, if that's ok, because we've had a few more releases of VistaVision titles in the last few months.
What are your top 4 favorite films that are on blu-ray that were filmed in VistaVision? This takes into account both the quality of the movie itself, as well as...
Thanks. Forgot about those even though I own them. I think NNW and The Searchers look very good. The skin tones on the Searchers doesn't seem quite right to me, but I don't want to start an argument about that one.
Haven't seen The Geisha Boy. How does that one look? And is it funny?
The VistaVision movies that have been released on blu-ray in high quality and restored transfers:
White Christmas
To Catch a Thief
Richard III
The Trouble With Harry
The Ten Commandments
The Searchers
Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
Vertigo
Rock-A-Bye Baby
North by Northwest
The Geisha Boy
(What...
A couple of years ago I watched the 1955 VistaVision comedy classic Artists and Models, starring Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Shirley MacLaine, and others. It was streaming, which makes pq evaluation a little tricky, but it looked terrific to me. It seemed fully restored, and the resolution had...
"Lil Abner," a VistaVision title from 1959, has recently appeared on Amazon Prime as a streaming title. It's not fully restored, but it looks to be in pretty good shape. Difficult to tell when streaming, but my guess is that the master came from a 35mm print. This movie is definitely a trip to...
Why wouldn't Criterion be interested in:
The Desperate Hours, directed by Wyler and starring Bogart and March
The Court Jester, a spectacular comedy starring Danny Kaye
The Tin Star, a tense Western directed by Mann and starring Fonda and Perkins
or probably 3-4 nearly equally worthy titles...
Now that WB is working with Criterion, doesn't that mean that Paramount's library is up for grabs too? My guess is that Paramount has probably done a pretty good job at preserving most of its VV titles....
And for those of you who might like to browse, here's a wikipedia list of the VistaVision titles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_VistaVision_films
You're kidding. And DVD only? Now that Warner has an agreement with Criterion would a blu from them be possible? Seems like it would be one of their most commercial titles from this era....
The Five Pennies, as you know, is also a very good film. It's much more drama than comedy, but I thought...
King Vidor's War and Peace, starring Henry Fonda, Audrey Hepburn, and Mel Ferrer, with a score by Nino Rota and cinematography by Jack Cardiff, is coming from Warner Bros. in a few months. It's a flawed film with many good elements imho. Warner is releasing this VistaVision title from 1956 in a...
Well, as 2014 draws to a close, where do we stand in terms of VistaVision titles on blu-ray? And what are your personal top three titles that aren't on blu that you'd like to see?
Here are three VistaVision titles where an HD restoration already seems to have been done, because you can stream...
from the booklet:
"When it premiered at London's Leicester Square Theatre in December 1955, Richard III ran 161 minutes. Subjected to cuts by both theatrical and television distributors, the film has been shown at various lengths over the years in the United Kingdom and the United States...
Lawrence Olivier directs and stars in Richard III, in a production filmed in VistaVision. Strong production values. Excellent cast. Almost stunning restoration from problematic original VistaVision elements by Grover Crisp and Co. And Shakespeare, of course. Highly Recommended Criterion release...
A new HD master of High Society has just popped up on Amazon Prime, and is "free" to stream for prime members. Looks very good to me! Fans of the film should check it out....
Keith: Thanks for the kind words. You've seen many more of the VV titles than I have. But I have seen St. Louis Blues and recommend it. Like your list of favorites too. Hope more of those end up on blu.
I'm not a fan of the superhero genre (the only one I really loved was the first Superman, back in 1978), but I did take note of what RAH wrote about how The Dark Knight Rises was filmed: "The Dark Knight Rises is an unusual film for 2012. Shot totally on that stuff with the holes on the side --...
Funny Face was funny! Laughed quite a lot. PQ is fine throughout, with just one little question mark spot of a few seconds. Reminded me a bit of Daddy Long Legs, which as most people here know is another spectacular and underrated musical about an older Astaire with a younger woman.
A new HD master of Funny Face, that musical hit from 1957, has recently shown up on Netflix streaming. Streaming is far from blu-ray, but it looks good to me so far in the first half hour, and I'm enjoying this silly and spectacular musical. There's more of the real Paris here than in An...
The big Western hit of 1957 that was filmed in VistaVision, Gunfight at O.K. Corral, is now up in a new high definition transfer at Netflix. To my eyes it looks good, although sometimes it's tricky to judge things in the lower-than-blu-ray-resolution of the streaming format. I've somehow never...
One more picture with Barbara Bel Geddes from The Five Pennies. Hey, maybe this is a title like Gypsy for the new Warner blu-ray archive? I still think a boxed set from WB HV of all the top Kaye movies in their collection (and they own or have access to almost all of them, I think) would be a...
Danny Kaye's VistaVision musical-comedy-drama The Five Pennies is now up in a beautiful (to my eyes, anyway) HD presentation at Amazon Prime instant video. No extra cost if you have Prime membership. Good film. Louis Armstrong and others also put in fine performances, including the always solid...
I've probably lost track, but did Paramount release only two VistaVision titles to blu-ray so far? The ones I'm coming up with are White Christmas and The Ten Commandments, both of which of which are fantastic and I think must buys for any blu-ray collection of classic films. What happened at...
When I got my blu-ray player about 4 years ago one of my first discs was The Searchers. And when I played it I was wowed. Beyond that, my jaw literally dropped. After seeing the VistaVision logo since I was a kid and never understanding what it was all about it was a sudden revelation to...
That's good news. Since Warner Home Video cares about quality more than most, I hope we can get a redo of this crucial title. The resolution is amazing, but the colors are a bit off. It's still quite watchable imho—although some feel differently—but it could be better.
