Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

It's good to see all of the intelligent reflections here about the many incarnations of Trek. I have a few thoughts on various topics to add. First, a request: I'm looking for a good short article that explores the influences that Star Trek has had on real world technology. For example, I've...

The summary of the new JJ Star Trek into Darkness has been released. I don't like the sound of it at all....We already had to sacrifice the entire planet Vulcan, and now this.... "In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into...

+1 Great Trek movie, but every time I've watched it since 1982 I've thought the same darn thing! The Chekov thing too--"I never forget a face!" But maybe at least he could have been on another part of the ship then and later promoted to the bridge?

Kevin: Great stuff on the budgets of the various Treks. Thanks. Could be wrong, but I think I read when it came out that V was something like c. $40 million, and that for VI they cut it back to c.$27m. But boy does Meyer get good bang for the buck. That's one of the reasons why I'm with you on...

Scott: Just out of curiosity, what's most cringe worthy for you in Generations? The whole Nexus thing is kind of silly, but it did give Kirk a chance to meet Picard and have his send off. When you come right down to it most Treks are pretty cringe worthy in some ways, right back to TOS...But at...

I imagine you're right that there's zero chance David Carson has a shot. I'm one of the very few who loves Generations. i thought it was a close to perfect Trek film. Great baddies, big laughs, cool special effects, emotions from multiple characters and the audience. Plus they didn't break...

It would be a dream come true for me if Nicholas Meyer got this film. I'm with you--his two are the best. I also really like Generations. How about bringing that director back? I'd rather have either of them. I'm only lukewarm on JJA.

I'm getting a little tired of franchise films...even for my beloved Star Trek. I can wait.

Normally they need about a year after filming is done for special effects and editing....So yeah, it'd be cutting it close to try to get it out by Dec. 2012.

You're probably right. It's probably more like $3 million an episode on average--and maybe less. And Josh makes many good points too. It's a huge undertaking and maybe a bridge too far...Time will tell.

Scott: We'll just have to agree to disagree. I think the revenue from blu-ray will be larger than the Netflix deal by quite a bit. That's of course if this happens, and I know it is a big if. I think the Netflix is the icing on the cake, not the other way around. But Netflix perhaps provides...

It will cost a lot. But they also stand to earn a lot. At this point CBS is earning steady but steadily declining money from TNG. Reinvesting in it would make it a blockbuster again on home video, cable, broadcast, netflix, etc. for many years to come. Say CBS can sell 200,000 sets of the...

On another forum, the Steve Hoffman music forum, I read that the raw 35mm film has all been saved, perfectly preserved, and to some degree catalogued in an air conditioned warehouse. There is a poster on that forum named Vidiot who says he was involved in a "proof of concept" for CBS a few years...

Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Given a list price of $129, and an average sales price of maybe $70, then 100,000 sets sold = $7 million dollars from blu-ray alone. Add in DVD, broadcast, cable, netflix, etc, and you get a lot more than that. It's all guessing, unless someone out there has the real sales figures. Where...

$50,000? That seems way, way low to me. To fix the fx on a major film and re-edit in in hd would probably be more like ten times that, don't you think? Where does the $50,000 figure come from? Still, I think they'd make their money back and that they should do it. My guess is they will...

Scott: I think actually that Paramount/CBS stands to make a good profit on this in the long run. Digital special effects have become a lot less expensive. I think for $10 million dollars or even less you can buy a lot of good enough digital effects, probably enough to cover a whole season. And...

Good news for Trek fans. Looks like TNG has a good chance of going HD. My favorite of the next gen shows is actually Voyager, so I'm sad they seem to be passing on that one for now...But TNG is a very, very close second. And if they make big bucks on that, and I think they will, perhaps they'll...

Me too. I remember watching that first battle of V'ger with the Klingons in 1980 on laser at a dept store. It's one of the best parts of the movie imho!

Ah, I was there opening night. There are good parts to TMP. I too think the director's cut makes it significantly better. But even the original has a lot of moments, even if the whole somehow doesn't quite make it. There's something grand about it though. I have watched it all told probably...
