Live Aid finally gets DVD release [posted 3/8/2004]

Folks giving to charity should make anyone feel better. ;) My point (which I guess I wasn't explaining very well) is whilst I think it's okay to bitch about the shoddy nature of this release on its own grounds, at the end of the day the whole exercise is for charity and I think we can take the...

Live Aid finally gets DVD release [posted 3/8/2004]

Ahem - as I have already pointed out in two previous posts to this thread. There are times when I feel like the lone voice in the wilderness contributing to threads. ;)

Joseph, this is a release for charity. I know what people are saying about not buying a sub-standard product, but this set is primarily there to raise funds for a worthwhile cause.

Colin, thanks for this info. I guess the only hope is that where two tracks segued into each other only one title is given, but I fear that's a forlorn hope. I wonder why stuff got left off? If it's because some copyright holders refused to give permission, then I think it's an excellent case...

To repeat - are we certain this listing is right? We are making a big assumption that it's wrong. I will still buy the disc because I'd like a legal souvenir of the day. I'll be annoyed if not everything is there but I'm not convinced that we've got the full track list yet. Has anyone got...

Are we certain these are missing? Given the massive set list, it's entirely possible that stuff has been missed off the listings by mistake. This has happened many times before with DVD releases. Haven't had time to check back across all this thread, but the following link may be useful -...

Thanks for the constructive criticism, Ernest. We 40-somethings are of course filled with envy at the music of your generation [pauses to laugh hysterically for several minutes] and its great memorable fund raising event at ... um, please remind me of a fund-raising event of similar magnitude to...

Live Aid finally gets DVD release [posted 3/8/2004]

Works out at £10 per disc, which for the UK at least is half the usual RRP for single discs. In any case, as Mark has correctly pointed out, retail is likely to be at most 75% of this. My view is that it's in a good cause, and just be grateful that all we have to complain about is whether or...

Queen were introduced on stage by Smith and Jones (a very popular Brit comedy duo at the time, but I guess not quite so well known in the USA). They came on dressed as policemen to say that there had been a complaint about the noise levels - from a lady in Belgium. They then introduced Queen...

Live Aid finally gets DVD release [posted 3/8/2004]

A couple of things: (1) the list is far from complete - there are lots of artists missing. E.g. where are The Beach Boys or Elton John (he did a duet with George Michael and a storming version of 'Can I Get A Witness?'). (2) I don't think the U2 entry is a misprint. As I recall it, they...

Live Aid finally gets DVD release [posted 3/8/2004]

Two basic things: (1) During the preamble to one of the songs, Dylan said that it would be a great idea to give some of the money being raised to American farmers (a significant number of whom were having a bad time financially in the mid eighties). To say this caused outrage is putting it...

I can sympathise to some extent, but: (1) By refusing to be included, regardless of the reason, LZ are evoking all the bad images of pretentious 70s dinosaur bands with egos the size of elephants (NB - most of Spinal Tap is based on real events). (2) Live Aid was about coming together to...

Given the logistical problems posed by the event, things went incredibly well.

Just let me get this straight - the surviving members of LZ are having a hissy fit because they think the standard of the performance isn't up to scratch? This is the same band that released 'The Song Remains the Same' isn't it? In any case, anything, and I mean *anything* looks good next to...

Yes, but as half the posts that followed hadn't heeded it, I thought it was worth repeating the point more explicitly. Try to see things in context before judging others, please.

I think it's worth noting that although Live Aid was on air for 10 hours or so, there were some gaps between acts, so if you cut those out, the total *music* that has to be fitted on is considerably less. There are (I think) 43 acts listed. Given that only the bigger acts got 20 minutes, and the...

I don't want to sound patronising or over-sentimental, but if you weren't part of the twenty-something age group at the time, then you can have no idea the place Live Aid holds in our hearts. We know a lot of the acts were awful, that's not the point. It's the whole thing that's important. Bob...
