Well, you will get your wish because Ridley has a longer cut ready to go which apparently will be available streaming and I would guess on disc. Covering Napoleon, particularly as many years of his life as this film covers, seems like it would certainly require more than 2 and a half or 3 hours.
So, I have read none of the reviews for this, I will wait to read them until after I have seen it, but the one odd thing about what is being said about the film is it has quite a bit of comedy in it, primarily centered around Joaquin's performance and his relationship with Josephine. I know...
The 4 1/2 hour cut is likely only going to appear on disc and potentially/probably streaming. The theatrical cut is 2 hours and 38 minutes. Ridley seems to enjoy doing alternate/extended cuts for home viewing.
Looks like we are going to get the long cut of Napoleon on disc and perhaps for home streaming:
Director Ridley Scott has a four-and-a-half hour long cut of the film Napoleon, providing a more in-depth focus on the character's first wife Joséphine.
Scott is hopeful that Apple might screen the...
"With Napoleon, I think we dug in and found the character, or as close to what he may have been. Joaquin is probably the most special, thoughtful actor I've ever worked with." -Ridley Scott https://tinyurl.com/2s4hh7r4
Well, Ridley seems to feel the picture has turned out magnificent and the...
It is said his theatrical cut will hit the 2 1/2 hour mark. I think this would be what he had in mind. I would also think that a home release would allow for a longer cut which Ridley is no stranger to doing and has done on several occasions. He shot this so quickly though, I wonder beyond the 2...
Well, honestly to tell a story about Napoleon that includes 6 battles, and I don't know if that means we will see significant footage from each battle, and also get into his love life, I would expect a long run time. Although, as Yang says, Ridley seems to try to contain his running times. He...
That is interesting and I would think it is so he can show it to an audience and then make whatever adjustments to it he feels it needs. I would be curious to know the running time of this cut.
Outstanding insights, David. I read somewhere that six battles will be touched upon and that Waterloo is not one of them so you are likely correct. I don't know how much of the battles we will see as six seems like a lot and this is meant to also get into his relationship with Josephine as well...
It would be crazy fast if this was done and released this December. My guess would be they thought about getting it out that fast and may wish they could because it likely would end up getting some nominations.
Honestly, a big epic production about Napoleon should be seen in a theater. I know this type of picture does not really fit with what is popular today but for all of us old school film buffs something like this requires a trip to the cinema.
Kind of stunning how fast Ridley can bring a picture like this to completion. To me a big historical epic like this that probably has Oscar potential makes sense as an end of year release. However, I would have more expected Christmas 2023 rather than Christmas 2022. I can't believe how fast...
Well, we know his picture will at least look great. He never fails in this regard. So, it will be a matter of how good is this script and how good is Phoenix as Napoleon?
I am very excited to see this one. Ridley is a good choice to make this, as he is the last man standing to some extent that...
Yes, he could be setting this up to be a two part deal with this portion focused on the early career and the perhaps a second film that covers the later period. Regardless, I am very excited to see this as I think Scott could really make a great film with this material.
I mean if he thought at...
Not sure who took the photos but they look really good in their costumes and as their characters so likely not an issue these have come out. It just makes me excited to see the film.
I read that Ridley is now shooting so, that looks like it is going to happen. The mini-series for HBO is still in a development stage and Ridely will obviously get his film out before that is even done shooting if it does. So, I would guess if one gets cancelled it will be the mini-series and...
Well, it may be a chicken and egg thing and I would guess they fell in love with the music first but end result was they became obsessed with the history because learning the words to the songs taught them the history. Hamilton, the man, is now a huge hero to them.
Which is funny because I said...
Well, I think the HBO mini-series deal also has to do with it being "based upon" a Kubrick script. Napoleon is a rather big subject that I think could support multiple films but I do wonder what interest still exists in him here in the United States.
Our culture here is now dominated by...
Well according to the interwebs as of October 2021 Cory stated:
"Been working on [Napoleon] now for, I wanna say, four or five years, maybe longer. So yeah, I'm definitely involved in that. We've got all the scripts of the episodes now and we're getting ready to see where the next stage is on...
Yes, at one point I had heard that they wanted to shoot Kubrick's Napoleon script. That has seemed to have long gone silent. Also, I would guess that if the series was 6 parts that would probably be 1 hour per part. So, I would guess 6 hours total. I have not looked at Kubrick's Napoleon script...
Well, right now I think you have basically 4 guys they will give big budgets to make pictures that are not franchise films with a fifth guy that is sort of almost in the club.
Scorsese
Nolan
Spielberg
Scott
and the guy that is sort of standing in the doorway of the club, Villeneuve. I do not...
Interesting. When I was kicking around the interwebs I saw something that said filming was underway on this, which did not shock me as Ridley seems to be able to get a production up and running in about 5 minutes but it must not be if they are just now locking down financing.
I am thrilled...
Well, about the age thing...Jodie Comer plays Josephine, who in real life was about 6 years Napoleon's senior but Comer is actually 19 years younger than Phoenix.
Acting!
Well, and make-up and maybe a bit of CGI.
