It makes total sense. Hershel thinks the group are people who commit "atrocities". The last thing he'd do is tell them about the barn. In Hershel's mind he's saving the zombies from heathens.

I think that is the point of the show - nothing is going to happen. There is no solution to the zombie situation. People are just biding their time, without hope.

I wonder if flies eating the zombies will eventually destroy them. It's a variation on "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a lollipop?" concept. How many nibbles from flies until the brainstem is eaten and the zombies fall to the ground? Or even without flies, they will fall...
