Just read on a few new sources (CNBC and CNN) that Herman Cain passed away after a month long battle with COVID-19. He was 74 years old. I'll reserve further comment, partly due to the passing of another life.

That sounds like a very wise decision. It is a shame that we are all in this predicament; but all it seems like you can do is keep your head down, remain mindful of the best safety practices and weather the storm. Best of luck to you and your better half.
- Walter.
Unfortunately, you are probably correct. I try to be hopeful about this situation, but there is no doubt that COVID-19 is hardly done with the U.S. Grim times ahead.

People aren't numbers. Each one of those deaths is an individual whose life was snuffed out. Nothing that anyone says is going to make me feel even a "tiny bit better" about 130,000 fatalities in this country. Literally tens of thousands of lives could have been saved by a competent...
Yeah, those are the same mental giants that were featured on CNN on Thursday. If they only endangered themselves, I couldn't care less; but I am tired of people who take the proper precautions being at increased risk because of these dunces and their ilk.
Local governments in areas where...
I am still following the news, but haven't been posting because as Dave said, the politics of the situation make it difficult to discuss within HTF guidelines. And frankly I'm tired of the stupidity of some in the face of the pandemic. Saw this on CNN earlier today. (The ignorance and willful...
Went grocery shopping a little while ago and my general impression was that masking was down a bit. One very small sample, but about 1/3 of the customers were bare-faced.

Carlo - you make a good point about the folks who would go to these events during a global pandemic and ignore social distancing and masks. The CNN editors had plenty of material with which to work; I am quite sure.
I know there is a perspective on all of this that basically affirms that...
I was watching the same footage on CNN that Carlo referenced and I did ask myself whether the clips were 'selected' or if everyone they spoke with was as stupid as a bag of hammers. There were a couple of real 'gems' in that footage that made me think it must have been screened. It is sort of...
There's "assholes" and then there's effing "assholes"...

What the hell is wrong with people? The mind boggles.

Saw this on CNN and thought I'd post a link. It discusses time spent in an environment as a risk factor for COVID-19 infection...

That just seems wrong, but this article alludes to discussions involving 'human challenge studies' so perhaps it will happen...

Since we are all into films on this site, a good simile for COVID-19 (at least in my mind) exists in this clip. (Not the best video quality, but it gets the point across)...

Went to the grocery store earlier this evening. Fairly well stocked, but that isn't why I am posting...
As I was loading groceries into my car, a couple of women got out of a car, wearing masks, but they then proceed to take one of the carts from the parking lot with their bare hands and enter...
Sweden did not impose social distancing measures or a lockdown. They rolled out voluntary 'trust-based' measures.

A well known figure dismissing the idea that a large group of individuals would be required to perform contact tracing in NY to handle future outbreaks of COVID-19:
"We should trace everybody for cancer, and heart disease. And obesity. I mean, a lot of...
I was talking with one of my best friends and he told me that his 55 year old neighbor went to sleep and never woke up. I don't know any other details; such as his health history. (I had never met the gentleman.)
Pretty scary. (I thought he had tested positive for COVID-19, but that is...
With the disclaimer that all of my knowledge of forensics comes from watching television procedurals. :)
Maybe they preserve tissue samples and retain them for some period of time in the event that other circumstances surrounding the individual's death come to light? Seems like they wouldn't...
Mark, thank you for the suggestion.
Having an oximeter seems like a very prudent thing to do these days. Placed my order, and just hope I'm still around to receive it. :) Seriously though, thanks for the reminder of the importance of testing. Case in point, I have felt at times like I was...

Allen Daviau has died from complications due to COVID-19. He was one of Steven Spielberg's collaborators; his cinematography credits included: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Avalon, and Bugsy...
In terms of failings, I would add:
Dismantling the government agencies designed to fight a pandemic by cutting funding, abolishing agencies and not filling vacancies with qualified personnel.
A lack of uniform federal guidelines for 'stay at home'.
Late mobilization of federal resources to...
