I just assumed it's so there's more space for video/audio information. Beyond the usual video and DD 5.1 track, there's about two commentaries per disc as well. The 12 episodes are spread over five discs (disc six is for special features).
No audio problems on my discs. The commentary track with Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane is as funny as their track on the first season set. Uninformative but funny. :)
HBO shows rarely end on a cliffhanger. Deadwood might never have a proper finish but it won't end with "Who will live and who will die? Find out next season on Deadwood!" :)

Now I can buy it and hope for the best and then have to get a replacement copy. Gord, is the same problem on all the discs? Begin "HBO cancelled Deadwood and now they're ruining the DVDs" conspiracy posts. :)
The third season of Deadwood starts in June (after The Sopranos ends its year) so HBO will probably wait until closer to that time to release the S2 DVD. That way the DVD and the season premiere cross promote each other. http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=4594 And by the way...
