Hoping for a decent month this time! There are so many great films out there whose only/best hope for a quality HD or 4k physical release is Criterion.
I have that one. One of my favorite discs. Can't imagine how that balloon could possibly look more beautifully red than it already does (on the aforemnt'd Bluray), but I guess we'll see..
3 "Criterionesque" titles that have been waiting forever for a Blu ray release (or a quality transfer of any kind):
MARAT/SADE (1967) All existing DVDs are either non-anamorphic or full-screen only.. There was a Japanese Bluray release, but it's not English-friendly.
STAND AND DELIVER (1988)...
Still waiting for long-rumored titles like "Marat/Sade", "Last Tango In Paris", "Stand And Deliver" and Orson Welles' "The Other Side of the Wind".. But Kurosawa's "Dreams" in 4k is admittedly a big (& very welcome) one.
Still hold out hope for LOLITA (60th annivrsary this year) or THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND.. My dream release, though, would be some sort of follow-up to the collossal GODZILLA set frm a few years back -- preferably smth of comparable 'stature' (figuratively, if not literally).
As far as I recall there's just the single scene with a Dr. Pepper vending machine in the backgrnd & maybe a scene or two showing one or more of the Americans drinking from a can of Dr.P while conversing +/or observing the video feed from Tokyo. It otherwise wasn't "poured on" quite as heavy as...
Assuming you mean the version of "Gigantis" with that On-screen title, apparently it's no longer available to anyone as Toho has decided this version is only to be seen with the (admittedly better) "Godzilla Raids Again" on-screen title.. Criterion usually will only include somethng if it's...
This much is certain: The likelihood of such a boxset happening greatly diminishes if Janus *cannot* secure rights to BOTH versions of Godzilla '84 (Japanese + U.S./Raymond Burr versions).. Criterion is nothing if not comprehensive.
For what it's worth: In recent visits to various Asian/Far East film--devoted forums (outside HTF), I find a lot of folks seem convinced, based on various factors & recent events -- incl. the success of "Godzilla v. Kong" -- that Criterion may have another Japanese Kaiju (most likely...
5 MORE titles I keep hearing (in various forums, incl. HTF) "are believed to be with/coming from Criterion", but which never seem to happen:
M*A*S*H (1970)
The French Connection (1971)
Never Cry Wolf (1983)
Patton (1970)
Prizzi's Honor (1985) (badly in need of remaster)
Unfortnately, it seems...
ANY chance Kubrick's "LOLITA" will get a Criterion (Blu +/or UHD) for its 60th Anniversary this year?
FWIW: 5 other titles I keep hearing are w/ Criterion, but whIch have yet to happen (the first three remain unreleased on any format higher thn DVD):
Sleuth (1972) (50th anniv this year)
The...
Not to change the subject, but maybe now that "Harold & Maude" are coming from The Mountain, perhaps the crazy--elevated prices for the Criterion Blu will come down a bit..
Until they decide to drop DVD once & for all, Criterion will likely not be releasing any UHDs.
Criterion doesn't really want to deal with 3 different formats at once. They would most likely either drop DVD -- still the industry's best-selling physical format overall (don't know if it's...
Still waiting for SOMEONE to release "Marat/Sade" on Blu-ray/UHD/16x9 DVD/whatever here on the West side of the Atlantic...
A Criterion release would clearly be ideal
Don't know if this has been mentioned but Bullmoose.com is currently having a sale on selected Criterion titles... eg. I picked up "The Great Escape" Blu and "Rushmore" Blu for $40 (less tax) total. (Shipping is free on orders over $35)
"Nashville"'s OOP? Dangnabbit! I wanted to get it during one of the past few 50% off sales but didn't have enough $$ and/or other titles took priority each time. I'm sure there are still plenty of copies in existence, but unfortuntly that won't stop Ebay or Amazn sellers from charging insane prices
Bette Davis was/ is considered one of the greatest actresses in Hollywood history and a true icon. The opinions of a few people here or anywhere else don't amount to a hill of beans (in this crazy world).
if you mean Paramount doesn't sublicense titles to third parties, seems The Mountain has a leak maybe they don't know about: I have at least a dozen Paramount-produced/ owned classics on Blu-ray, courtesy of Criterion, KinoLorber and Olive..
I'D recently been wondering "When in hell is WB/ WBArchive going to give us A FACE IN THE CROWD on Blu-ray? Well, forget WB/Archive (as fine a company as they are), this news beats that idea by a country mile or so...
I guess the more multi-disc sets of classic films we can get out, the better. It also would not hurt to have more genuine "event" titles along lines of "StarWars: The Force Awakens" and "Avatar" for people to get excited about.
BTW, anyone see this Flatpanelshd article from earlier this year...
Does Criterion still have a deal with Universal? If so, I wholeheartedly nominate CAPE FEAR (1962) for inclusion in their December or January batch. The film is a true classic, but the existing Blu-ray by Uni leaves so much to be desired. Mediocre transfer w/ very meager extras.
Well, on the one hand, I'd love to see what Criterion would do with "Superman".. On the other hand, I could certainly live with not having to purchase the title again...
