As far as I can tell, truly original stories haven't been written for quite a long time. That doesn't really matter though, as long as the story is told well.
Why didn't Japan get it until now? According to IMDB, they're the only country that didn't get the movie in the simultaneous worldwide release. Batman Begins came out there just a few days after it came out here.
