The sequence in the silent version when his mother and sister come across Ben Hur sleeping gets me every time. When I showed the movie to my Highschool classes, I actually used to step in the hall so they did not see me tear up. On the other hand, I did not realize until I showed it to others...
I was really surprised at how religious the silent version was. I showed it to a public school high school media class with many different religions, and though nobody seemed offended, I talked to the class after and not exactly apologized, but said I hadn’t realized.

I enjoy it as a classic, but greatly prefer the silent version with its technicolor inserts, and real ships for the sea battles. It is far more moving than the Heston version as well.
