I work for a Toyota dealer service dept. We've yet to have to replace the hybrid battery on a Prius, 1st or 2nd generation. The VW tdi gets a lot of mention as a viable alternative, but I find VW reliability suspect, perhaps more so in the area of electrical malfunctions. I could be wrong...
