I dont think any ambiguity was intended in relation to the ending. From listening to the commentary, the intention was to have a happy ending because Boyle felt it was necesssary after the unrelenting grimness of the rest of the film. It is why they changed the ending to the one that is now on...

Sorry Ron didn't explain myself properly. It is an alternate ending (and I think much better) but it is an extra on the DVD and not the actual ending to the film released.
