How can the headphone tracks be distortion free, but the cd is not?

I enjoy this score very much, but I agree witht comment on Terraforming. Initially I thought it was my headphones not handling the bass, however after running it through my two SVSubs and getting the same result, I realized it was the track itself. Glad I'm not the only one who heard this.
