Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I saw the trailer and it’s great. Hopefully it’s up soon for all to see.

I was thinking that I’m glad we’re getting separate releases for TMP and the DC. I would have wanted them both anyway. Sure, I would’ve loved a Close Encounters-style set with all the versions together via branching, but after the long wait we’ve endured, it doesn’t matter. We’re getting two...

As I have said repeatedly, doing HD versions of DS9 and Voyager doesn’t make sense if your goal is to sell discs. However, for the cost of about 3 Discovery episodes, you can remaster 7 seasons and make them exclusive to P+. Then, a few months later, you can sell Blu-rays and it’s all gravy. The...

I believe this is legit. However, I have two questions: 1) Why a picture of Paul Simon where the artwork should be? 2) Under the pre-order button, it says "Pre-Order. We will try to get it for you." Try to get it? WTF?

TMP's score is the best in the series and well deserving of the 3 CD edition that La-La Land Records did. However, I also enjoy the music by James Horner for TWOK and TSFS, and Leonard Rosenman for TVH. Goldsmith's score for TFF is also very good, and Cliff Eidelman's music for TUC, while...

Far be it for me to dispute those guys, who absolutely know their stuff, but it would fly in the face of how the industry operates. Hey, I really do hope it’s true. I just don’t think it is.

It almost certainly is only the theatrical version. When they’re working on the DC for 4K, it won’t be a secret.

I agree that if this is true, TMP will almost certainly be the standard cut. Hopefully, the director's cut is still on the table. Maybe they hope to sell these in groups 1-4, 5-7, 8-10. You can make the argument, I guess, that Generations is an original cast movie, as well as being a TNG movie...

Foster is generally credited with writing the story that became TMP. Prior to that, he also wrote the Star Trek Logs books, based on the animated series. Here is his Memory Alpha entry: https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Alan_Dean_Foster And from the TMP MA entry:

Bob Peak’s artwork for the poster for TMP is my favorite movie poster of all time. Peak was a master of the form. I don’t think anyone was ever better.

He said he was “hopeful” that blu-rays of DS9 and Voyager would come out, and that there was interest at CBS, but that the process is complicated (which we knew). I don’t expect any news on TMP or the others until after the merger with Viacom happens and Trek is reunited, and the whole company...

This could be the moment when things turn around. Or not. Paramount and CBS are on the cusp of re-merging (look for it Aug. 8, we're told, when the companies report earnings) and bringing Star Trek under one roof is said to be a primary factor in getting it done (much like how Disney brought its...

Take this with a grain of salt until we have confirmation, but apparently at the SDCC "Inglorious Treksperts" panel yesterday (of which The Digital Bits' Bill Hunt was a panelist), an executive (no word on who) said "preliminary negotiations" have started with Paramount to bring The Director's...

It's possible that interest in Star Trek could be very hot this fall with the release of the Picard series on CBS AA. Rolling Stone magazine has already cited that as one of its most-wanted new series of the year. If Paramount was smart (I know... I know...) they'd take advantage of that with...

Man, I remember walking into that Loews as a kid and thinking this was a palace. Having such a grand place to show movies influenced how I thought about movies. I grew up in Bayonne; we used to have field trips to the Loews. Sorry to take this off track, fellow Trekkers!

Egads! The Jersey City State Theater! Spent a lot of time there as a kid. The last time I recall being there was 1981's For Your Eyes Only. The theater wasn't the palace that Loews was, across the street (Loews is being restored and still shows classic films; I saw Metropolis there about 10...

It's strange to me that Star Trek, which has had so many home video releases over the last 30+ years, should be the subject of several new "holy grails" - namely, the Director's Cut of TMP, a remastered Deep Space Nine, and quality blu-rays of the other (pre-Abrams) films (except TWOK).

The Final Frontier is a movie I will enjoying watching again, every few years. I really do not care if I ever see Nemesis again.

Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Any list where Nemesis isn't dead last has some problems. I remember Berman's comments, and I don't want to bash him - he did do a lot of great things for Star Trek - but if he really believed everything he said in support of Nemesis, he was simply tone-deaf to Star Trek at that point. That...

Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I've said for a while now that the only way things will change with the way Star Trek is treated at Paramount (and CBS) is for a regime change there. And even then, unless you get someone in charge who understands and respects those properties and fans, it won't be much different. My...

This artwork is from the home video release: Hard to believe Star Trek IV is 30 years old. Yikes. Assuming they don't change it first, what is Paramount going to do when people buy TMP and complain it's not the directors cut? I may buy it just to see their reaction.

Not sure what to make of this. I'm sure it is not a true HD master of TMP, because we would have heard about that. All 10 of the original “Star Trek” movies are getting great looking Steelbook editions in July...

Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

I guess I am in the minority, but I always wanted to see older movies. Probably because I grew up in the late 60s and early 70s when the movie landscape was pretty barren for kids my age. Prior to Star Wars, which came out when I was 10, if you wanted good sci-fi or adventure films, you had to...

Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Not true. Every teenager and younger has seen the Star Wars films, and the Tim Burton Batmans, among others. There's no reason, with the proper motivation, that young people can't feel the same about Star Trek.

Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

The problem is that by not doing new transfers, they are pretty much guaranteeing the old movies will fade away. New audiences - which are the lifeblood of any franchise - will eventually turn their noses up at anything that's not blu-ray or UHD quality. They're going to create a situation...

Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

Incredibly disappointing. Paramount and CBS prove yet again that they don't know what to do with Star Trek. Better transfers of the Abrams films? How much better do they have to be? Meanwhile, there are 30- and 35- year old films that need help. Maybe if the 2017 show becomes a monster hit...
