I'll be watching that in the near future.
I watched Narrow Margin today, a marvellous movie with excellent lighting by George Diskant. Possibly Marie Windsor's finest hour in films.
I watched Criterion's 4K disc of The Last Picture Show yesterday. I don't rate it as highly as some people do but it's an interesting film that I'll watched every five years or so. One reason it's interesting is that it shows Texas as being cold!
I've never heard of this before. I'll do a bit of research!
I watched The Broadway Melody last night. It was good to hear two standards in their original setting. The film has an undistinguished cast and a two girls dancers and a guy story structure which was done much better in the later MGM...
Yesterday I watched A Lion Is In The Streets, a film I don't know well, having seen it previously only on television. The Warner Archive Blu-ray disc is excellent. The film is in the same genre as All The King's Men and A Face In The Crowd and stars James Cagney as a huckster who suddenly gets...
I watched this yesterday. I agree the Blu-ray disc has good images but I don't agree that the film is underrated. The core premise is borrowed from Bad Day At Black Rock and the final suspense sequence comes from Alfred Hitchcock, both Sabotage and North By Northwest. The narrative line...
I watched Nikita (aka La Femme Nikita) last night. It's not really my kind of movie but every now and then I'm in the mood for some glossy kinetics and this fits the bill. It's essentially a blend of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Red Sparrow.
Two days ago I watched Ladies They Talk About...
The File On Thelma Jordan last night. A particular favorite of mine ever since my first viewing of this as a late evening movie on TV. The Olive Blu-ray disc has no "extras" but I think a commentary from someone like Alan K. Rode might be worth listening to.
Yesterday: The Long Wait, a tough crime thriller with a high-powered cast and expressive lighting from Franz Planer. Classic Flix did well, releasing this not very well-known film on disc.
I watched Gentleman Jim last night. I don't recall ever having seen this in a cinema; only on television. The Warner Archive disc has a disclaimer about attitudes in the movies belonging to the period in which the film was made etc. etc. I assume they refer to the depiction of Irish families in...
Yesterday I watched 99 River Street, a good, tough crime drama with a very strong cast and a very capable director. There are two prominent female roles, played by Evelyn Keys and Peggie Castle. Evelyn Keys was always a good actress who never let the audience down, but for some quirk of mine...
I had a fresh look at Foxy Brown yesterday. I like Pam Grier and wish she had worked with better screenplays and more talented colleagues. She's the only really good element in this movie. The core story is crude but adequate and with more care, talent and refinement could have been worked into...
Another re-watch of a Kino-Lorber blu-ray disc last night: Naked Alibi, a film I like a lot. I'm not a Gloria Grahame fan but she's excellent in this film. Russell Metty's contribution is likewise excellent.
I has another look at Undercover Girl last night. It's a routine story but done pretty well. I feel it would have had more impact if a stronger female presence, someone like Allison Hayes, had been in the leading role. In her day, Pam Grier should have done a remake!
Two days ago, a cousin once removed - i.e. the son of a cousin - wanted to see Gilda on a big screen, so we watched that together. He's now a Rita Hayworth fan!
Last night I watched Bonjour Tristesse, a film I like a lot and which I think is under valued. Although he was regarded as a monster...
Last night I watched Camille, the very famous Garbo movie about which I've always had reservations. I first saw this film shortly after I'd read in translation the source novel. At that time, the orthodox opinion of "respectable" critics and Garbo fans was that Robert Taylor was out of his...
Yesterday I watched Spy Hunt, a lightweight movie but entertaining and with an interesting cast. I always like Marta Toren, a flexible actress. Kino's Blu-ray disc is good.
I re-watched Step By Step again today. It's a very lightweight movie but it does star Anne Jeffreys whom I enjoy looking at. The Warner Archive Blu-ray disc is excellent. I wonder if they could release the other Anne Jeffreys "step" film from RKO, the one she did with Frank Sinatra, Step Lively...
I got around at long last to watching Helen Of Troy last night. I've been waiting until I was in the right mood. Well, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie which I saw when it first came out. For me, Max Steiner's music made a big contribution. The Blu-ray disc is a big upgrade from the DVD which I...
I didn't know she had written her autobiography. I'll have to find it as she had an interesting story to tell.
Last night I re-watched Dancing Co-Ed, one of Lana Turner's lesser films. She's Ok and so was Ann Rutherford and three stalwart supporting actors, Thurston Hall Leon Errol and Roscoe...
I watched Hell Bent For Leather two days ago, on DVD because I haven't upgraded to that Blu-ray set. Yesterday I re-watched another Audie Murphy Western, Night Passage which I saw as a boy when it first came out. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen it now!
I had another look at The Secret Partner yesterday. The film was released by MGM and starred Stewart Granger and Haya Harareet both of whom had previously been in big MGM movies. Were they cast because they were still contractually obliged to MGM?
I like this very modest film a lot. It has a...
A strange co-incidence. Two days ago I watched The Angry Hills because I'd come across a publicity photo which intrigued me. Yesterday I watched The Peking Medallion because I was in the mood for a bit of fast moving adventure combined with some glamour. Both films have the same opening plot...
Last night I watched The System which I hadn't seen for decades. This is one of the few films about which my feelings have not changed at all in the intervening years. I find the story and the ambiance interesting. I find Oliver Reed to be a very strong screen presence but unlikable and not very...
Maybe, but as I don't care if a film qualifies as film noir or not, that's not important to me. Obviously some people will disagree. What matters to me is that a film's ending should both make sense and resolve some of the issues the story has brought up. One Way Street's ending is arbitrary and...
Yesterday I watched One Way Street which I don't recall having seen before. A good film with an excellent cast, it held my attention throughout. Once again, my respect for Marta Toren increased. I was surprised by the very abrupt twist at the end which, frankly, I could have done without. A...
