Reread what I said. Almost 30 years. That means since Star Wars. If you've forgotten, THX was PRE Star Wars (and pre American Graffiti for that matter).
You've expressed it very well, Carlo. Lucas wasn't able to come up with a good story element and writing that explicitly SHOWED (in a mystical, I sense it/feel it way) why Anakin was the most powerful with the Force, but instead had to use the lame (and lazy) plot device of the midis.
The difference being that Superman was supposed to be quasi science fiction instead of fantasy (yes, Star Wars has SF hardware, but the whole Force/Jedi thing was supposed to be about mysticial "ways", not a biology class).
Obviously some people have been shown to have sufficiently low standards that they're fine with this release. My standards haven't changed, and I don't buy any of the wishful-thinkling attempts at justification ("If I buy this, Lucas will give me a high quality version later on"). The opposite...
Thanks for the post, Matt. It's a very good summary of everything that's wrong with Lucasfilm and its attitude towards video releases (hard sell marketing substituting for real quality, a dismissive attitude towards complaints, and a refusal to EVER admit mistakes).
I never said "2005 vs. 2006 model". I said "revised vs. unrevised". The fact is that the unrevised model is being made NOW, in 2006 (just as the OT is being released NOW, not 14 years ago). It's perfectly proper to expect current model cars to have a/c (and not be made from 14 year old parts)...
The point of my analogy was to show that an attitude that says “be ‘grateful’ for what you get” is NOT I the reaction I should be “expected” to have when offered unsatisfactory product, nor is it the attitude anyone thinks (except, obviously, some) any business should express towards potential...
Analogy: You're shopping for a vehicle, and you want air conditioning (you live in Houston). The salesman tells you "if you want air conditioning, buy the "updated" version of the vehicle (which isn't at all what you want), not this version". You quite reasonably tell the guy "WHAT? Why...
The issue is not what you or I or anyone else would like. It's what we reasonably EXPECT, and what we consider an acceptable level of quality. Obviously you (and him) think a major studio release in the year 2006 that's nonanamorphic, and made from 14 year old non hidef, noncomponent video...
The films PEOPLE WANT TO SEE that are THE BASIS FOR THIS RELEASE AND THE ENTIRE FOCUS OF THE MARKETING CAMPAIGN FOR IT are not. No amount of semantic evasion changes that fact.
Yeah, when has ANY DVD release used "bonus material" as the marketing hook to buy it the way LFL is? And when was an alternative version of a film nonanamorphic when the other version on the release was?
The norm in this case is a very low standard, and there’s no technical reason for it to be that low. I think it’s typically that low because it has to share space with other language tracks (5.1 and such), so it’s given bottom priority. No such reason exists here. It’s simply because they can’t...
You could look at it that way. Or you could look at it as a transfer that will be getting NO help from high bit-rate. It just confirms the truly rock-bottom status of this release.
Given the demonstrated Lucas attitude towards this release, it makes more sense to believe it will be single layer until and unless Lucasfilm shows otherwise.
Actually, that's what I was referring to in post #1245. The guy who posted it had previously posted that they were going to be LD transfers well before Bill Hunt said it, so I believe him.
Also think single layer for all 3 films, including the 134 minute long Jedi. Wonderful bit-rate there. And the audio will be a super-clear 192 kbps at best. Yes, this is the quality some can hardly wait to buy...
Lucas may spin it that way, but of course that would be a distortion of the facts. The issue is not technology, but QUALITY. This is C grade quality at best in this day and age. Others may be content with quality so far below what is normally expected and demanded (makes me wonder what quality...
There is no indication whatsoever that what they “think” he wants deviates one iota from what he really does want. No one thinks for a second that Lucas would tolerate ANY deviance on this issue from ANYONE who works for him. So of course this is micromanaging, in the sense that they are simply...
So Jack, are you in the habit of "relaxing your standards" for any other product you highly anticipate? It seems you don't demand much in the way of quality. You're willing to accept quality that is CLEARLY below industry standards ("hey, so the mechanic put a substandard part in my car. Who am...
