Two versions of Is It Like Today?--the original by World Party followed by an excellent cover by Eliza Gilkyson. Tough for me to pick a favourite as they are both very good. Gilkyson's cover, though, omits the final two lines of the original lyric and thereby changes the meaning of the song...
Using the same iPhone app as above, now streaming a channel called Linn Classical. As near as I can tell, it offers excerpts from recordings by Linn and affiliated labels. I can record a chunk of time onto my phone and look at the names of the pieces I like and purchase the full piece later...
Something called Street Symphony (streaming from my iPhone app TuneIn set to a jazz station--WEMU 89.1--in Ypsilanti, Michigan). Don't know the artist.
Just finished Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet (SACD). Was trying my player in DSD mode to the AVR rather than having it convert to PCM in the player. Made no difference in sound that I could tell (just the front panel display showed "DSD" instead of "PCM"). Either way, it's a great...
Mendelssohn's Piano Trios 1 and 2--Julia Fischer (violin) Jonathan Gilad (piano) and Daniel Muller-Schott (cello) on MCH SACD.
i'm using my PS3 for SACD playback, now that I've got an AVR with HDMI inputs. This allowed me to move my venerable Marantz DV6400 SACD/DVD-A player to my living room...
I use mine to record radio concerts on CBC radio and to make mixes (though less so the latter since I got an iPhone, admittedly). I've slowed down my use of it for making new discs but I still use it regularly for listening to the ones I've already made.
As for what I'm listening to at the...
Muriel Zoe--Neon Blue
German jazz vocalist. Borrowed the CD from a German friend who is over here for a 2 year work contract. Will have to get a copy for myself. :tu:
My favourite Genesis album. :tu:
I'm now listening to a Naxos disc featuring a young violinist, Simone Lamsma, who won several prizes in the early 2000s. It is a collection of violin works by Elgar (one of my favourite composers)--the Sonata in E minor and a number of shorter pieces. It is from...
A mixed sample from my iTunes collection plugged into my HT (so enjoying Dolby PLII (Music) with a lot of tunes--last one before going off to bed was Year of the Cat by Al Stewart).
Agreed (via SACD MCH for me). I like all of it a lot but Welcome to the Machine (while not my favourite track--the title track is my favourite) seems to most benefit from the MCH mix. Definitely going to be in heavy rotation for a while.
Just finished the SACD of Wish You Were Here in its MCH glory. Rather pricy with shipping (42$) but I have no regrets. This will definitely be in heavy rotation for a while.
Gary Jules--Mad World
This is a cover of the Tears for Fears song but takes the tempo way down. I like the original quite a bit but I find this version resonates more directly with the lyrics.
A mix of laid-back 70s tunes on my iPhone playlist--currently playing is The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. On deck is Strange Magic by ELO.
