    It would probably have run matted to 1.66 in most European cinemas and as a European director David Lean must have been aware of that.

    Out of the three options of 1.85, 1.37 or both they certainly would get the fewest complaints with a release that includes both a 1.85 and 1.37:1 aspect ratio version. Or they can pull another On The Waterfront and throw in a 1.66:1 version for good measure ;)
