Star Wars: The Last Jedi discussion thread(Warning: Spoilers!)

I did not like TLJ but I can't imagine why anyone would take their frustrations out on one of the actors, who had absolutely nothing to do with the script or the direction of the film. Makes no sense at all.

No, it's the lack of backstory that made him boring. He came out of nowhere and then just disappeared. I wasn't given a reason to care or not care about whether he lived or died. But, unfortunately, that was a problem with a lot of the characters in the film.

I didn't need scenes like that either, but in the video I posted, the guy goes into differences between the characters and why backstory on The Emperor wasn't as important, such as: the story didn't take place in an environment that was as well established as it is now, plus--The Emperor was #1...

I would have liked some more needless exposition. ;-) This guy has a theory as to why so many (including myself) felt the lack of background on Snoke hurt his character more than it hurt The Emperor's character (starts at about 12:30):

I'll go in the opposite direction and predict that it will affect SOLO and ep. IX. They will both still make a ton of money, of course, (especially IX) but the feeling that so many people like me have that VIII was the end of something and not the middle, will keep some people away from IX that...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi discussion thread(Warning: Spoilers!)

I've found that to be true in that so far, all the people I've encountered who liked the movie have been on the internet. I haven't spoken to any real-world people yet who liked the film (this includes the guy at the grocery store who always wants to talk about star wars when he sees me ).

This review is amusingly written; both TLJ lovers and haters should enjoy it: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/double-feature-film-review-hamillpalooza-laserhawk_us_5a49b13be4b0d86c803c7830 My favorite quote: "You added a casino planet, and you didn’t bring back Lando?!"

Luke was always my favorite character and I would have liked to have seen a lot more done with him in this film, for sure. Just as a side note, I've been keeping an eye on the RT scores and the audience score has dropped again---it's now at 50%.

She was able to "connect" with Luke while he was dangling under Cloud City in ESB, and after the death star explosion in ROTJ. I always thought of those 2 instances as her using the force.

Not likely. I remember when similar statements were made about the prequels. I still hate them, and so do a lot of others. I even think for a lot of people who liked them when they came out, they like them less now than when they first saw them. Most fans liked TFA and R1. TLJ is really the...

To be honest, while I agree with a lot of the negative YouTube reviews, a lot of the stuff they nit pick about is not stuff that particularly bothered me. It's fun to talk about, but I don't really care about the inaccuracies with physics--scientific accuracy is not why I love the OT (it didn't...

It used to be that trailers weren't subject to copyright infringement, that may still be the case. I wouldn't classify this guy from E.T. Canada as a snarky nerd, but he's pretty mad, lol. His problems with the film are pretty much my problems as well: This guy probably could be classified as...

When I saw that x-wing in the water, I thought to myself "he's gonna raise that thing out of the water and go!" I was disappointed when he didn't. But, would an X-Wing that's been under the water for x-years be able to fly? Either that, or Luke could have had Rey raise the x-wing out of the...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi discussion thread(Warning: Spoilers!)

I would have liked to see something happen with Luke's X-Wing. Seeing it under the water was a great shot, but there just weren't enough moments like that, or they were just too brief. Were you on the fence the first time you saw Star Wars in '77 and needed a 2nd viewing to make up your mind...

That was an interesting article. The writer liked a lot of things about the movie that I didn't like, but pretty much all the things he didn't like I can agree with.

"“For Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we have seen an uptick in people posting written user reviews, as fans are very passionate about this movie and the franchise. The number of written reviews being posted by fans is comparable to Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the spokesperson added." I know that...

I hate TPM...but for sake of argument, I think of Watto (ugh!) more like a nasty Cantina patron than a Snoke-type villan. TFA really built him up to be something more than what he became. That's great for fans of Snoke, but it doesn't help much when you're watching the movie. I've never been an...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi discussion thread(Warning: Spoilers!)

I get what you're saying; maybe trying to make an Emperor/Snoke parallel doesn't work, but watching characters that you're not supposed to care if they live or die...you might as well just watch a test pattern for 2 1/2 hours. Seriously though, it seems like a wasted opportunity for...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi discussion thread(Warning: Spoilers!)

I apologize if I misinterpreted your characterizations of people who expressed dislike with the film. However, saying it's "ludicrous" to think the film was bad, or that some people who didn't like the film are intentionally being "contrary" does somewhat question the validity of their opinions...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi discussion thread(Warning: Spoilers!)

I didn't love TFA, but I liked it well enough to buy the blu-ray. Somehow, I feel like TLJ was the end of something, not the middle. So that, plus the fact that I didn't like it, makes it feel like IX will be starting something new that I'm not looking forward to seeing. But I'll probably catch...

I did see "Attack Of The Clones" after not liking "The Phantom Menace" and I did see "Revenge Of The Sith" after not liking (actually, hating) "Clones". But I guess I just kept hoping the films would get better. I'm older now, and I guess I've learned my lesson. I had high hopes for TLJ and it...

Really? Why? I've clarified/edited my post since you quoted it. You may want to look at it again. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you weren't personally referring to me as "contrary", but there's obviously a double-standard going on here. If you think the film is bad, you're...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi discussion thread(Warning: Spoilers!)

That's not what I said at all. Knowing how I feel about the film, it's MORE plausible to me that people would write negative reviews about the film based on the fact that they genuinely disliked the film, because I had the exact same experience. OR...they were not entertained by the film. It's...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi discussion thread(Warning: Spoilers!)

Critics being paid to give good reviews has been going on since the invention of Movable Type. Do I really think there's a conspiracy? No. But I think it's even less likely that people are writing bad reviews for any other reason than they seriously didn't like the film.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi discussion thread(Warning: Spoilers!)

I agree and I'm one of the ones who wrote a negative review on RT. I wrote the negative review because I think it was a poorly written, directed and edited film. Frankly, I'm shocked that 93% of the "critics" gave it a positive review. I think it's more likely that they're on Disney's payroll...
