NEW Disney Movie Club Exclusives 4/20/2021 -- The Black Cauldron 30th Anniversary Edition

The unavailability of the film meant it was years before I noticed the similarities between Gummi Bears' Cavin and Calla and this film's Taran and Eilonwy. That show was also set in a Welsh-sounding kingdom called Dunwyn.

How is this different from the majority of Disney adaptations up to that point? This is the one time the dog actually ate their homework. It's not even a complete version of itself, and it's unknown whether that is even possible.

Point taken, but you did yourself a favor skipping Chicken Little. It laid an egg so rotten, Edith Massey wouldn't eat it! ;) If you hated Home on the Range, you will loathe that. You might actually find more amusement from a rerun of Cartoon Network's Cow and Chicken. The difference is that...

NEW Disney Movie Club Exclusives 4/20/2021 -- The Black Cauldron 30th Anniversary Edition

Violence was a more acute issue than sex when it comes to what actually scared children at that test screening. Well-said, although I would submit Chicken Little as the nadir of the canon thus far. But as for what happened to TBC once The Katzenberg Cut stripped it of whatever narrative...

Melting faces bothered Katzenberg but this didn't?

NEW Disney Movie Club Exclusives 4/20/2021 -- The Black Cauldron 30th Anniversary Edition

The galleries showed a much different concept design for Gurgi that looked more like Phil from Hercules. Instead, he became the missing link between Goofy and Pluto!* The squeaky wheel gets the grease. They listened to everyone who complained about missing extras. *Can you find a better...

NEW Disney Movie Club Exclusives 4/20/2021 -- The Black Cauldron 30th Anniversary Edition

I think this was a true Academy ratio transfer. It was the CLV laserdisc from the 1990s whereas the concurrent CAV disc release was the CinemaScope version letterboxed. The 1980s laserdiscs were both the same pan and scan transfer of the CinemaScope version that got released on tape then.

In theory, there should be plenty of room for both versions on a disc since each one would have black bars on either the top and bottom (the CinemaScope version) or the sides (the Academy ratio version, which I actually managed to track down the late 1990s laserdisc of). All that empty black...

NEW Disney Movie Club Exclusives 4/20/2021 -- The Black Cauldron 30th Anniversary Edition

EDIT: I had not read Jerry Beck's clarifying statement yet on fake WB news. It's disappointing to see the extras get jettisoned because the deleted storyboard sequence (not an actual cut scene) gave a clue to what might have been if Katzenberg had just minded his own business. The Fairfolk's...

Since they had much more money to spend on projects that didn't deliver, the post-Pocahontas downturn also saw lower lows since management ultimately got what they wanted and shut down 2D animation even after Eisner's resignation. It has been 10 years since the last one, given the unfortunately...

NEW Disney Movie Club Exclusives 4/20/2021 -- The Black Cauldron 30th Anniversary Edition

Since I was only two when the movie came out and the company spent the rest of the 1980s and most of the 1990s essentially pretending it never happened when even The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver and Company got second chances in theaters, I never really got a chance to see it until the...

They wouldn't exist without Song of the South but their existence didn't come at its expense at first as they co-existed peacefully well into the 1980s. SOTS actually went 16 years without a reissue: its third and fourth times in theaters were in 1956 and 1972. Two of those films came into...

NEW Disney Movie Club Exclusives 4/20/2021 -- The Black Cauldron 30th Anniversary Edition

You may be bothered by constantly having to hear it, but I'm ten times as bothered by Disney's unwarranted hostility towards it. I feel the same way any time threads about Bedknobs and Broomsticks or Pete's Dragon get derailed by off-topic umbrella-shaped detours.

NEW Disney Movie Club Exclusives 4/20/2021 -- The Black Cauldron 30th Anniversary Edition

Victory Thru Air Power was considered more worthy of a Walt Disney Treasures DVD release than Song of the South.* So was a Disneyland episode with Wernher Von Braun. Let that sink in. *Victory's director, H.C. Potter, was almost the director of Song of the South until Walt replaced him with...

Probably not, but that doesn't automatically mean it's gone forever considering all the other films they made whose scenes they played musical chairs with. Also doubtful. When have any of the others had them?
