Exactly right. I watched a film in HD that I hadn't watched in several years and never in HD - Panic Room, and the ads aren't really that terrible as they only last 20-30 seconds each in groups of two or three.
And having watched Bohemian Rhapsody yesterday, I have to say that much of it is vividly directed which even with his problematic absences and firing, Singer had to have at least been partially responsible for.
The Academy NEEDS the money that ABC pays for the license to broadcast in order to fund their projects for the year. Taking it off network TV would not be feasible.

Oscar night was the one school night during the entire year that my parents let me stay up and watch WAY past my bedtime. They knew how much it meant to me. I wasn't allowed to miss school the next day, but I did get to stay up to the bitter end if I wanted to, and I always wanted to.
