Thanks DaViD Boulet. I've seen all of those in commercial dvds converted from PAL to NTSC. I should have been clearer in my previous post. I meant to ask for examples of artifacts from converting PAL to NTSC in the dvd player. I don't see any of those artifacts when watching PAL dvds of any of...

DJ, can you give an example of a PAL to NTSC conversion artifact?

I don't think the colors are oversaturated. It is a bit brighter than the AB disc. That first picture shows it fairly well. I don't remember the colors looking like that second pic, but I haven't watched the entire disc yet.

I hadn't previously watched it but put it on today. I haven't seen the R1 AB release but one of the guys here said that the EC disc is cooler (ie bluer) and skin tones tend to be pinker than the R1 release. But general PQ and detail was better on the EC disc.

I watched JP SB last night. The colors are nowhere near that 'comic' looking. Skin tones are dead on. I did use a different computer for that comparison than I normally use. In particular the image application was one I don't normally use and was a freebie. That could explain the colors.

I plan on doing a comparison between the two Zulu discs next week. I'm curious to see how the MGM version compares to the old Criterion laserdisc.

Damn Kino has done some nice work lately. Those colors in the Image released look faded and even yellowed some in the green.

The R2 should read 1.85:1. You can see in the screen shots that it is very slightly letterboxed. Like they all are. You can't tell from the pictures but the R2 has more detail and much better color. Especially the reds, a lot more saturated than the R1 SE. note, the R1 OO (Live) version is...

I bet the Wellspring disc came from a PAL source. It would explain the 'flickering' I see in the starts in that first screen shot. My RP91 doesn't do well with 2:2 pulldown.

There is some EE on the buildings in your first picture (on the site). Perhaps the apparent sharpness is artifical. The non-anamporphic does see a tad more pink than the new one.

Who's AR is correct for The Prodigal Son? Everyones head looks skinnier in the Universe version. I'd be tempted to think the HKL version is wrong as they've done this in the past.

Personally I think the bottom one is incorrect. It doesn't look right. edit: nevermind, the top image could be stretched to fit the AR.

It says,"Region 5 - PAL (Europe, Middle East & Japan only)". Maybe the Europe/Japan part is wrong then. I knew R5 was Russian but that last bit confused me.

Gary, the Belle De Jour review says the Ruscico disc is R5. That a typo?

No fair Gary. That disc doesn't have English subs. At least thats what Amazon.de says. http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/tg/...360270-5759719
