Interesting theory, except the fact that there was a premiere print that had a multi-channel stereo soundtrack. But I suppose Fosse could have requested that final release prints be monaural only. However I think it is much more likely that, like many movies in the early 1970s, optical mono was...
I guess it would be too much to hope that the original scoring sessions of Cabaret are sitting in someone's basement to be discovered like they were for Vertigo?
I am thrilled at this good news. Cabaret got no respect on DVD, only getting a recycled letterbox transfer. And keep in mind that Cabaret won 8 Oscars to Godfather's 3. The only two nominations Cabaret didn't win were Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, both of which went to The Godfather.
