Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

No, it does not have built-in GPS hardware. The guy at that link is using Bluetooth to link to an (inexpensive) external GPS receiver for that -- and the receiver could just be something one keeps installed in the vehicle (or not). _Man_

Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

Other than the moderately higher PPI (of ~170 vs ~130 on the iPad), the display seems comparable to the iPad's (although probably not as fingerprint/smudge resistant as the iPad 2). Not sure if you'd find it to be a big diff, but I do think it's a fairly noticeable one though the screen is of...

Eh... Sounds like they're only blocking use of their new rental service, and we weren't looking to rent anything to watch on these devices anyway. My wife actually isn't interested in putting any movies on her NC at all -- and if I were to put anything on there, it'd be something we already...

Trying this w/ the NC's built-in browser. Only seems to work (very slowly) in source editing mode.

Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

Decided to just keep the NC and give it to my wife instead -- she'll probably let the kids play w/ it some as well -- but we've also decided to hold off on getting her a smartphone for now since she now unexpectedly has the NC, which she liked a lot after playing w/ it some at the local B&N...

Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

Hehheh... Both my coworker friend and I read about the earlier Amazon rumors, but it's starting to sound like we might get serious gifting remorse if I stick w/ the NC at this point. Still, the NC does seem like it'll be a more family-with-kids-friendly reader/tablet so far. Maybe I should...

Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

Yeah, I don't really intend to return anything for cash (to pocket myself) per se. If I return anything, it'll definitely be to do something in line w/ the spirit of the gift itself. I was actually thinking I'd just take him out for a nice lunch somewhere or something (and maybe go see Thor on...

Thanks for sharing in a bit of the excitement. Been too busy w/ other stuff to get into it over the weekend though, so still kinda debating for now. And unfortunately, looks like I can't actually unpack the NC to check it out, if I want to return it to Staple's (w/in their 14-day return...

Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

Today, I got an extremely pleasant surprise "nudge" to decide sooner rather than later on whether to go w/ the Nook Color. Had been chatting on-and-off w/ a coworker friend about tablets and such, including my recent new interest in the NC, and he decided to surprise me w/ one as his token of...

Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

After doing a little bit of digging, I'm actually starting to consider getting a Nook for the family instead of any of the Android tablets from Samsung, Moto, et al. or the iPad. It actually sounds surprisingly good for a $250 tablet, especially if one decides to root it and maybe install one...

Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

That reminds me. How are the cameras on the Samsung Galaxy phones and Motorola Droid whatevers compared to the iPhone 4? I've just been assuming they're all comparable enough for my wife's purposes. On these mobile phones, I can certainly see the appeal of shooting quick, casual videos on...

Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

So I guess there are no rumors/news of a 7-8" Honecomb tablet then? Maybe the Android camp should consider ditching the 10" form factor and go w/ 7-8" and 13-15" instead rather than compete head-on w/ the iPad. Surely, there's enough interest in something smaller (for portability, perhaps...

Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

Yeah, except most(?) such apps still seem to require actual GPS for that aspect, IIRC, eg. star gazing type apps (unless you wanna hand-input your own location coordinates, maybe using traditional means or some other WiFi-to-coordinates app, which I don't recall seeing in the App Store, at the...

Hmmm... Didn't realize the Samsung 10.1 would be notably lighter (than Xoom and old iPad) -- but it also lacks USB(?) and HDMI(?). Wonder how plasticky it'll actually feel though... As I look at these things some more, makes me wonder if they shouldn't spend the $ (and design efforts)...

Nice to see the Android side already considering some price slashing in light of the iPad 2 launch. Wonder if Costco will follow suit w/ Sam's Club. Anyone know if any of the WiFi-only tablets, including iPad 2, will actually have enabled, built-in GPS hardware (regardless of whether one...

Yay for being app hounds! _Man_ PS: Alright, maybe the earlier, blunt comment was unnecessary -- and any of us can get a tad over-excited about any little tidbit, whether truly meaningful or not, from the fanboy-infested blogosphere -- but still, it ain't fun trying to figure out what...

The more you say you get it, the more it actually sounds like you do not. Ok, you drive to Canada. Yes, that's certainly a concern, especially if your carrier of choice charges crazy roaming costs. You're right. I don't drive to Canada. If I do, I would want to find out how that impacts...

That's good to know, if true. Thanks for putting that more clearly, Hanson. It sorta sounded like that's what's happening, but I wasn't sure at all. Not sure how good and truly intuitive that will actually be on an Android tablet (or even smartphone), but that approach generally works...

Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

Yes, I agree having the app store concept, especially combined w/ a good app review/certification process, is a good thing and does help as Hanson points out. My main beef wrt this discussion is the marketing ploy being used to tout iOS over Android, et al. Meanwhile, there seems to be this...

Wait, Sam, I was not aware that Google Maps is not preinstalled on the Xoom. If that's really case and is the main reason why there's no coverage on it, then that's far more understandable. In that case, I'm guessing that's Verizon's meddling ways playing into things (again) -- I hope they're...

Thanks for the nice firsthand reports, guys. Can't wait to give one a try for myself although it sounds like it'll take an actual trial purchase to give one a truly good spin -- Costco may indeed be the answer to that, especially if their 90-day policy can cover a contract cancellation w/ V.

Seems pointless to debate the Google Maps/Nav thing w/ you, Dave. You seem bent on only seeing this via some preconceived notion of how useful it can possibly be in actual practice. If Google Maps/Nav wasn't the bee's knees already, no amount of improvement will matter much. And it's...
  24. ManW_TheUncool

Android Honeycomb Tablet OS is official. This does not suck!

The reviews haven't touched on it at all. In fact, I haven't seen any of apparently iOS-centric, Android smartphone reviews spend all that much time on that either. And that's really the rub there. And who said this latest version of Google Maps actually requires a tedious pre-drive...

You might also be able to conserve your wireless data plan usage (or simply not worry much about traveling thru poor coverage areas) if you don't need to be online fulltime to use Google Maps/Nav -- something I'd think Dave can appreciate. But yeah, it does seem like many of these reviews...
