I don't think that would happen. What if all the nominees don't meet the standards? Do they not award the Oscar?
Seems like if they're nominated, and people vote for them, they'll still win. If they're disqualified from winning, they should be removed from the list of nominees before voting...
It's interesting, but it also widely expands the rules that had been in place for decades even before streaming was a thing. Didn't studios previously only have to open films in LA and NY for at least one week within the calendar year for Oscar eligibility? Granted, most of them would then go...
I think he's asking for movies included in the celebration montage that were not originally produced by Warner. I think these three were all WB originals?
Never mind. :D
They should just remove the In Memoriam segment from the show, IMO. All it does is generate controversy and bad feelings. That they provide a link to a web version does not alleviate the fact that someone, somewhere, is making decisions about those deemed "not worthy" of inclusion on the big...
Ratings for the ceremony are reportedly up slightly from last year. Estimated live audience this year around 16 million viewers (about 15.4 million last year watched live). Last year, it went up by a million or so when counting DVR time-shifted viewing.
EDIT: Final numbers are 18.7 million, up...
Interesting that one of the writers at The Hollywood Reporter thought Spielberg was the runner-up in the Best Director's race. I thought the applause was pretty tepid whenever The Fabelmans or Spielberg was announced. Didn't seem to be that much support in the room.
I'm 50-something and agree...
Some Hollywood insiders share (anonymously) their thoughts on the nominations and how they voted at EW:

Interestingly, to me, there doesn't seem to be a lot of love for The Whale or Brendan Fraser...
If the Academy can wean themselves off TV money, then more power to them. The hullabaloo over ratings and audience is directly related to them wanting the big money for TV broadcast rights to fund their organization. Without decent ratings, TV isn't going to pay that money.
If they can do...
I think ticket prices play into the lower box office for some films, too. Given the ever higher prices, when people pay to go to a theater they want to be "wowed" which means action and special effects. They're probably less inclined to go and watch two hours of people sitting around talking...
As previously noted, the money received by selling the broadcast rights to a network funds a good chunk of the yearly budget for AMPAS. That's why they're petrified that the ratings are sinking, and the networks won't be interested in paying big bucks to show the ceremony, so that money goes...
I think the issue was mostly that an unknown actress was nominated for a film no one had heard of. Doesn't really fit with the glamorous movie-star mystique that the Academy wants to maintain.
Then they need to ban campaigning altogether. If the only campaigns allowed are those backed by major money from major studios, and the smaller studios cannot mount a grass-roots style campaign, then that's biased against the smaller independent guys.
Stop campaign advertising completely and...
Most of the noms had relatively modest bumps this weekend. EEAAO had the biggest gross of the re-releases or expansions, but Women Talking had the best per-screen average (though I think this is the first weekend it's had a wide-ish release).
The folks involved with Till are not happy at their film being snubbed (link to story and the director's statement, below; producer Whoopi Goldberg also made comments on "The View" this week).
Till director Chinonye Chukwu slams 'misogyny towards Black women' after Oscars snub
Interesting that they went with Top Gun for a BP nom, but snubbed Wakanda Forever which seems to have the more prestigious noms in other categories, including Best (Supporting) Actress. Though I guess TG does have the screenplay nom.
Edited to note category is Supporting Actress.
