You don't think 8 nominations, third most among all films, is that acknowledgement? Seems pretty high praise to me with a lot of voters selecting it above other films.
It seems to be the first film in a while that has a soundtrack with pop songs written specifically for the movie. Soundtrack songs used to be a big thing back in the 80's, but it seems like that hasn't been done much over the last few decades.
They tried last year with the Maverick soundtrack...
This is one of those insanely popular things I just don't "get".
I've seen the trailers and everything, but you couldn't force me at gunpoint to watch this movie.
Sad, but I think there's a lot of people uninterested in Geriatric Jones even if they were fans of the earlier films. I'd be much more excited if they'd recast and started a new chapter. Haven't decided yet if I'll see the new one in the theater or just wait for home video.

Wikipedia has this list of known ticket sales, though I'm still a bit skeptical that some of the modern films would have sold more tix than some popular classic films that were re-released repeatedly to theaters for decades. I'd imagine accurate ticket sales figures are hard to come by before...
Mattel is also not going to let them go too far out of mainstream with their IP. I'm not sure if PG or PG-13 makes a huge difference to anyone these days, except maybe younger kids who may see PG as "for babies". It might be to the benefit of the box office if it is PG-13 without going too blue.
