I think that's an out-sized part of the problem. Those that are fans of the story/subject already have a pretty definitive, award-winning film adaptation, so probably aren't too thrilled that it was remade. For those that have no interest in the story/subject, there's no version of this that...
Award noms are no guarantee of box office. Some of the most nominated films from recent years grossed a paltry amount.
Also, to a portion of the moviegoing audience, critical praise and awards can actually be a turn off as it can be an indicator of a long, boring, "message" movie, rather than...
Box office forecasts seem pretty conservative, with Deadline predicting a $12-17 million weekend. It seems like it's only on 2800 screens, too. Major wide releases are usually in the ballpark of 4000. Wonder why so few screens given it's the only major release in the past two weeks?
That seems...
The trailers and ads didn't seem like anything special, but I watched it on a recent flight and liked it well enough to pick up the blu-ray at a recent sale for $10. Have not yet re-watched it on a bigger screen.
It will be interesting to see how WSS does at the box office. It's the third...
Which I don't understand as they don't announce the vote totals. No one who loses ever knows how many votes they received. If they feel the person who they think is sure to win gave the best performance, they should vote for them. There's no point in voting for someone else in that situation.
Musicals do fine if they're films people want to see. The Greatest Showman, La La Land, Hairspray, Mamma Mia films, the Disney live action remakes and animated musicals are all relatively recent successes. Sometimes they just don't seem to connect, like Cats or In the Heights.
Also, wasn't it a Fox project when it was filmed? They probably have no choice as Spielberg is unlikely to cut the smoking scenes, if they'd even be able to be edited without harming the adjacent scenes.
Or they could make the cigarettes into walkie-talkies.
Agreed. Most people that would buy these either have no interest in traveling seeing a live show or cannot afford to do so.
There are millions of people that don't live in NYC that would like to see these. For those people, this becomes a huge expense for traveling and lodging even beyond the...
Odd deja vu for me with that teaser, as the whistling that opens it is nearly identical to that used in a horror movie I watched this week (I think it was Just Before Dawn).
I kept waiting for the screaming to start when the maniac jumped out.
There are a lot of dumb contestants on game shows these days. Seems like they're selecting them on a basis other than intelligence.
I did see the clue you described above. I had no idea about the lyric having never seen any version of the musical, but guessed WSS as it fit the rest of the clue...
I never said I didn't like it. I've never seen it. But as noted, it's not a premise that I find very appealing. I believe I have the DVD somewhere in my collection (I think it was $3 at Big Lots one time), but have not watched it. I'll get to it someday.
I think it's going to be a difficult sell to modern audiences. Singing, dancing street gangs and your biggest cast name is Ansel Elgort. I enjoy musicals, but I've never been able to work up much interest for any version of WSS.
Spielberg with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in The Post could only...
I'm surprised he even responded with the detail he did. So far, this is just someone venting on Twitter. It doesn't sound like there are any actual legal proceedings underway.
As Robert says, Elgort would have been 20 at the time, and the girl was reportedly 17. I'm not going to defend Elgort, but I also don't view this quite the same as a 40-something sleeping with a 14 year old.
I wonder if they're looking at the failure of Cats and experiencing any trepidation about the future performance of another film version of a classic musical.
The budget for this is reportedly $100 million, so it's going to have to make a hell of a lot of money to break even. I'm not sure why...
Oooooh, letters! Scary stuff!
He still seems to be losing the distinction between a Fox movie and a Disney movie. As long as WSS is not promoted as a Disney flick, I don't see the issue myself.
