I think folks in the Carolinas/Virginia (for Gaston) and Cape Cod (for Hermine) would argue the non-landfall declaration. Hermine was basically a non-event, but I think Gaston caused some significant flooding in the mid-Atlantic region.
I updated the satellite in the thread's first post to show more of the eastern US. Ivan has now been upgraded to a hurricane. Long range forecast has it coming through the Caribbean and into the southwestern Bahamas in 5-6 days. Expected to be a Cat. 3 or 4 by first landfall (Hispanola/Cuba).
Current forecast on Ivan has it possibly into the Caribbean, over Hispanola, and into the Bahamas region within 7-10 days. All subject to major changes, of course, since they can barely predict these things 24-hours at a time, but if you've boarded up your house for Frances, you might...
Good news if the weakening trend continues, but the NHC forecasters still seem to think it will re-intensify prior to landfall, back to around 140 MPH.
Not to pile on, but the NHC has now identified "Tropical Depression 9" in the central Atlantic. First forecasts call for this TD to continue to strengthen into TS/Hurricane Ivan and follow a more southerly course than Frances, blowing through the Antilles and into the Caribbean (closer to...
From the National Hurricane Center's latest discussion of Frances: THE MOST INTERESTING ASPECT THIS MORNING IS THAT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GLOBAL FORECAST SYSTEM...GFS...AND GFDL MODELS HAVE SHIFTED THEIR TRACKS A LITTLE TO THE WEST AND ARE NOW IN BETTER AGREEMENT WITH THE OTHER...
The problem is that blown out window will lead to water damage and further internal wind damage (dirt and sand-blasting of your walls if the wind is strong enough). I'd suggest the plywood, if they still have any available that is. People were buying it like crazy over last weekend already...
Hopefully this won't add insult to injury by taking a more directly western track across the state and exiting into the Gulf in the same area where Charley made landfall. I'd imagine there's still a lot of debris lying around that would again become airborne.
Just a reminder to our friends along the southeastern US coast and in the Bahamas that Cat. 4 Frances is approaching. Current forecasts have it plowing through the islands Thursday/Friday, and landfalling somewhere in Florida on Saturday/Sunday. Forecasts and tracks are subject to change...
