I wouldn't be surprised if the indifferent response to their lone venture into 3D Blu-ray soured Criterion on multiformat releases in general. Once burned, twice shy and all that.

And again it doesn't help that Criterion's catalog is largely made up of films that were not taken care of very well and/or chewed up by the rudimentary filming technology of their day. I honestly don't see the point of a 4k of Rules of the Game. Do you?

Its a slew of factors including cost of production, most of their catalog not lending itself to 4k all that well, and licensing issues.

Gary whining about the most minute (or in this case not really major) cropping has been his raison d'etre for 20 years now. This is why I finally lost interest in his clickbaity word salad ("The image is tight and HD sourced!") reviews and wildly inaccurate caps some time ago.

Someone got a response from Crtierion at Blu-ray.com: Basically it does appear the older transfer is the one that wasn't framed correctly. Furthermore DVDBeaver's screencaps are infamous for using the wrong colorspace so I wouldn't put any faith in them at all.

Until we have the "About the Transfer" notes in hand I'm inclined to believe that the Crtierion is truer to Heckerling's intentions. Mostly because I trust Gary Tooze as far as I can throw him.

I refuse to believe Universal couldn't find a 35mm optical track for that mono. That just smells fishy.

The TV cut is in mono right? Also how hard is it to go take the optical track off an ip or master positive?

So basically the situation is Criterion's contracts for big studios are so old that they exclude UHD and the stuff they can release they chose not to because...lets be honest...there's little to be gained from 65% of Criterion's Janus catalog beyond 2k. Yeah sounds about right.

Yeah I'm going with Universal's licensing agreement probably stating they retain the UHD rights.
