Yes it does, London's union went on strike as a show of support of America while Mathison was still recording the score. This is why they shifted to Vienna. Says so in the liner notes.
Well let me run them down for you... Mathison's version - This is the one as heard in the film, conducted by Mathison after Bernard was blocked from doing so by the ASCAP strike. About half of it is in mono due to strike action and all releases are missing some tracks due to age related...
Due to the poor quality of the existing mono track, I wouldn't recommend doing this at all. It would be my original hope that Universal would at least give it a good declicking but I don't think thats ever going to happen.
IIIRC Vertigo is a dvd rot affected title. And yes the colors are misrendered in the opening (its supposed to start monochrome but the anamorphic Universal has Kim Novak's face as being orange!). Otherwise I'm unaware of any problems with the transfer.
The "current release" you just mentioned is the same exact disc from 1997 except with different (and inferior IMHO) cover art, it might also be out of print (I haven't checked lately). Also there has been no news in regard to a separate issue of the Masterpiece Collection edition of Vertigo...
