I'm hoping to review the second season DVD set but haven't seen anything come in this direction yet... On the other hand, I haven't heard an official release date for the US either, so they may be waiting to tailor the release date to the premiere of the third season.
TNT has indeed picked up the new Dallas for a third season, once again of 15 episodes. So we'll get to see some answers to the questions from the cliffhanger. And then there will be new questions asked, of course. Not too shabby for a show that was originally a hit thirty years ago. Now...
I hear you, Drew, and we should definitely cut them a little slack.
But at the same time, I've been working in TV for some time, and these guys had plenty of time to reset their closing episodes, at least initially. The place where they had to scramble with the writing was for the funeral...
I was fine with the finale while watching it, but if you tug on the threads a little, the whole sweater comes undone.
Ahem...SPOILERS:
We are told that JR did what he did because of a terminal diagnosis never shown before that comes out of left field. It's moving to us because we know that's...
Now that the Season 2 finale has aired, we all know the answers to the questions regarding JR's death and regarding Pamela.
I'm curious to hear the responses to the revelations, now that people have had time to watch the last two eps.
I believe the show will come back for a third season, but...
I agree that Audrey Landers looked great in her appearance. She actually has aged the best out of the original cast, and it was fun watching her and the other original characters snarling at each other. At least it gave Bobby a good line about her claws.
I think there's a bit more going on...
Also, having read the interview with Cynthia Cidre and Michael Robin at the Dallas website, I realize that I was partially incorrect in an earlier post. I thought they had shot some material with J.R. for episode 7, but Cidre admits that they constructed his appearances completely from clips...
I watched the funeral episode and was a bit moved by the performance by Josh Henderson. They made an interesting choice in having Bobby have a much more negative reaction - his character may slip a bit over the next few episodes. Given that this is effectively a new show, from new writers who...
Episode 7 was indeed the final episode done with Larry Hagman. It appears to me that he probably didn't finish all the scenes they intended him to do, and some rewriting was done around his passing. I don't know if he was always supposed to have suddenly gone to Abu Dhabi. I have a feeling...
Paul, you're quite correct regarding relative ratings for cable vs. network TV shows. For this reason, the new Dallas may be in decent shape - but we'll have to see how things go for the rest of the season's airings. Re VP, she was never contacted to my knowledge. The rumors that have been...
Based on the ratings TNT is enduring right now for all of their shows, Dallas may not be in that much trouble, at least not yet. It's more likely that they'll pick it up for another season, but with a reduced budget. Regarding Victoria Principal, we should keep in mind that from her...
The information in the Deadline "scoop" is consistent with what has been known since the TNT revival of the series began, although it carefully doesn't get into the particulars. It's very nice of Victoria Principal to publicly address the speculation about whether she would return to this role...
A few more things to keep in mind. TNT has not been having a good year with its new shows. They wanted a lot more out of Monday Mornings and the other new material. So Dallas' numbers are down but it's not as bad as one might have thought. Unless TNT is planning on scrapping almost all of...
Scott, you could well be right. We'll just have to see. Keep in mind that Larry Hagman wasn't in all of the first season of the new series due to his treatments at the time. His appearances at the end of the year were a lot more frail than many people were expecting to see. Thankfully there...
Drew, you're right that it's frustrating to watch people predict a show you like going down to defeat. It's even more frustrating when you're working on a show like that and you see the posters on various ratings websites openly cheering for your show to be cancelled. Sometimes it really does...
Mark, you're right that TNT had to pay good salaries to get Hagman, Duffy and Grey back. But these were nothing next to the salaries that were paid back in the day. Keep in mind that Larry Hagman was able to get himself some incredible compensation as well as a producer/director slot on the...
Paul, you're absolutely right. And for Victoria Principal, the last thing she did as Pam was get into that car wreck. The lookalike actress they brought in for the infamous Paris scene did her work some years later, at a time when Principal had moved well beyond whatever was happening on the...
Just to keep the record straight, I don't believe Victoria Principal was ever asked. I don't believe she would have done the show had she been asked, but it wasn't her choice whether to do the show or not.
It's pretty normal these days that shows will be declared dead or doomed after a single night's ratings. Could be true in this case, but I've been working in this long enough to get surprised many times over. A couple of quick corrections. The new Dallas is not an expensive show - TNT shows...
I agree that the show's ratings were low. We'll have to see how things go over the course of the season that TNT has already paid for. It's possible that they'll call it a day after this, but it's also possible that they'll hang on to it for one more season. Either way, this isn't the same...
I'm more intrigued by what I saw in the first two episodes premiered this evening. SPOILERS BELOW FOR THE SECOND SEASON: First off, the lighting is a bit better, so it's not as harsh, particularly on the older cast members. Linda Gray in particular benefits from the greater attention going...
I'll try not to belabor this, as it could give the wrong impression about such things. I am as much a fan of the character of Pamela as of any of the original characters of Dallas from the first series. I found her character to be one of the most level-headed out of the bunch when things got...
You're absolutely right that Pam's departure from the original series was dictated by Victoria Principal's wish to leave the show, just as Bobby's death had been mandated by Patrick Duffy wanting to move on. But Bobby was essential to the backbone of the series, where Pam wound up being less...
I always liked the character of Pam, particularly as originally envisioned by David Jacobs. She was the point person for the audience - she was our way into the world of the Ewings. But as I understand it, she chose to leave the series, much as Patrick Duffy chose to leave it two years prior...
As Tom was pointing out, I believe that Gary and Val will appear for the inevitable funeral show, as will at least one other familiar face from Dallas' past. But I would be very amused if they went ahead and had Gary and Val saying to Bobby, "You know, we heard you had died..."
Not all the featurettes were from the web promos. The first two, which run longer, are new. Of course, they're using the same footage, but there's more of it...
I would argue that the new series is actually better than what I've seen of the final years of the original show, and certainly better than the reunion movies. Because it's not just rehashing old storylines or scrambling to find a new adversary for J.R. each year. It's actually moving the main...
The classic primetime soap opera returns to the well as<strong class='bbc'> Dallas: The Complete First Season</strong> arrives on DVD ahead of the premiere of its 2nd season at the end of this month. The re-started series, airing on the TNT network, stars a young...
