    AVM-20 Review.....finally!

Ajay- You should really read my post again... :) I didn't say Sony, and no where did I say that the Denon receiver "would sound better than a $3k+ pre/pro". I said that I put it's sound quality up against it. And yes, I would certainly expect the AVM-20 to sound better. But $2G better, *and*...

    AVM-20 Review.....finally!

DTS-ES: I personally view this as required for my next pre/pro. Why? Because I have an excellent 5.1 DD/DTS pre/pro right now. And, I have already added the 6th rear center channel, and enjoy quite a much better sound field with a DPL processor giving me that rear center channel with DPL mode...

    AVM-20 Review.....finally!

Ajay- You can get DPL II in a $500 receiver now. So if I was going to pay $3200 now for a pre/pro, I kind of would expect that it would have it. And not to expect to have to pay more later and wait another 5 months for it. Actually, I would hope that Anthem is thinking to themselves, "Gee...

    AVM-20 Review.....finally!

My problem is this: The AVM-20 was announced with all this cool stuff, for the $3200 price. (But actually, I remember $3000 somewhere, but I'll defer to John K.) And now, we all find out that ya gots to pay extra *for stuff that is already available in a $500 receiver.* Shipping now. My...

    AVM-20 Review.....finally!

Man, I go to the relatives for a day, and look at all I missed! :) ... It is *my opinion* that since the AVM-20 is a brand new unit, and that since everything else on the planet now selling has DTS-ES, and most everything *current* now selling has DPL II, that this upgrade should be free. If...

    AVM-20 Review.....finally!

John- But Windows is in the $100 range. I agree with others, that if I'm paying $3g's for something like the Anthem, a subsequent upgrade to support DTS-ES and DPL should be included. For free. Just plain good customer support in my opinion.

    AVM-20 Review.....finally!

Randy- I have never heard of Cirrus Surround. Outlaw and Smart (among others) use "Circle" Surround. I think you are confusing Cirrus Logic DPL II decoding chips (and A/D converters, etc.) with "Circle Surround," which is a specific surround decoding method. I just did a quick search on...

    AVM-20 Review.....finally!

John- You got it! :) (THX) Surround EX decoding for DD EX/DTS-ES discs, and Circle Surround for "std" DD/DTS discs! I keep thinking that I'm paranoid that no else seems to be bothered by this "problem"... And, I was going to actually buy the B&K Ref 30 until I found out that it had no...

    AVM-20 Review.....finally!

Randy- The 950 uses Circle Surround. Straight DPL decoding to extracts the "rear" channel(s) from the "surround" channels, can collapse the soundstage from the surrounds to the rear(s) if too much mono (in phase) material is present between the L + R surrounds. This is why a receiver/pre-pro...

    AVM-20 Review.....finally!

$3G and no DTS-ES... Brian- Great review! As I was reading it, I was checking off the mental list of items I want for my next pre/pro (I have a Sony TA-E9000ES, with a Shure HTS-5300 DPL processor for Surround EX/DTS-ES). (Re-EQ, flexible bass management, internal processing of at least...
