Boo Hoo! My Sony MDS-JA555ES minidisc deck goes in for repair tomorrow. :o(

Mike- You can get the HHB 830 for under $500 if you look around. And, about 6 weeks ago, Gary at the DAT Store had a used/refurb/B-stock Marantz 631 for around $300.

Boo Hoo! My Sony MDS-JA555ES minidisc deck goes in for repair tomorrow. :o(

Mike- If you follow this thread back a little ways, I was just in the market for a pro burner. I looked at the Tascam CD-RW700 (I have a Tascam DA-40 DAT deck that I *really* like), the HHB 830, and the Marantz 631. Ended up with the HHB. I encountered too many people that said that they had...

Keith- Ever think that this thread would get this long? :) But I bet, you wish that it hadn't needed to be this long... ;)

Boo Hoo! My Sony MDS-JA555ES minidisc deck goes in for repair tomorrow. :o(

Thanks Phil! See? ATRAC rules! :) Well, maybe once Sony realizes that MD has reached the height of its penetration into the US (and other markets), maybe they'd think about using ATRAC for CD-R's. Kind of like Microsoft giving away it's browser for free, which doesn't seem like a good idea...

Boo Hoo! My Sony MDS-JA555ES minidisc deck goes in for repair tomorrow. :o(

Here's a stupid question for MD, CD, CD-R (and even DAT) folks: (Or just "digital recording" in general...) Atrac and MP3 are digital compression algorythms for music. Having used MD machines for the past 4 years or so, I would say that Atrac is pretty darn transparent. And, I don't know...

Matthew- I somewhat looked into the Marantz. 2 things turned me off: the innerds are not by Pioneer and I wanted those Burr Brown DACs, and Gary Davis from the DAT Store in LA had one, and said the HHB was a better value. He said that the Marantz was kind of cheap, and wasn't really used alot...

Boo Hoo! My Sony MDS-JA555ES minidisc deck goes in for repair tomorrow. :o(

Michael- After reading about Keith's problems with his Sony ES MD unit, I simply cannot believe that you would consider a Sony pro CD-R/RW unit! :D Oh, I got my HHB 830 for $489. Free shipping too. And (I liked this even more than the free shipping), it was dropped shipped from HHB in LA...

Boo Hoo! My Sony MDS-JA555ES minidisc deck goes in for repair tomorrow. :o(

Rachel- The time frame for a CD-R losing it's reflectivity is: 100-150 yrs for the one type. And, upwards of 300 years for another. (I still don't know all the combinations of gold and silver backing metal, and all the dyes yet.) Check out www.cdrfaq.org. And then there's also a very nice...

Boo Hoo! My Sony MDS-JA555ES minidisc deck goes in for repair tomorrow. :o(

Philip- Another downside to MD is that it's not as easy as with CD (CD-R/RW) to transfer tracks to a PC, do editing, sound shaping, whatever, and then transfer back to MD.

Keith- I think that ATRAC type R *is* level 4.5. Same thing. And, I don't know if you knew this, but Tascam is the pro division of Teac. And, as far as the mini reference series from Teac, I have read a few reviews that quite amazingly said it was very good stuff. I know, looks like dinky...

Keith- Not possible to send it to a Sony repair center *not* near you?

Boo Hoo! My Sony MDS-JA555ES minidisc deck goes in for repair tomorrow. :o(

Keith- I thought that I read somewhere :) (either through distillation of the marketing at Sony's site, or maybe at www.minidisc.org) that the only differences between the 333 and the 555 were that the 333 had that MDLP thing, and that the 555 had separate power supplies for the analog and...

Boo Hoo! My Sony MDS-JA555ES minidisc deck goes in for repair tomorrow. :o(

Keith- Be careful in terms of pro vs consumer. I tried out both the Sony pro PCM-R500 and consumer DTC-ZA5ES DAT decks. Same, exact transport in both. The ES model was built better though. (Weighed like 5 lbs more.) But I didn't like either and ended up with a Tascam. Also, most pro...

Boo Hoo! My Sony MDS-JA555ES minidisc deck goes in for repair tomorrow. :o(

Keith and Matthew: Neat-o: I have an HHB 830 on the way. For me, I fear that MD has just became obsolete. :frowning: I plan to use the stand alone burner along with my PC burner. I can't imagine that the editing flexibility with that combo can be beat by MD. I like being able to edit WAV...

Keith- Yeah, I went with the Tascam DA-40. (Got one for less than $500 on ebay. < 200 hrs useage.) One of my more satisfying purchases actually. Great deck. And for the TV, I went with a Panasonic SuperFlat set. (And now they have Pure Flat! Turkeys... :) ) Panasonic seems to have...

Keith- I feel for you, man. Your deck might as well be "priceless", if they can't get you another one... (Stick to your guns man. I would push for a brand new deck.) And also, I am not crazy. I've had problems with Sony's portable CD players, 1st generation DVD players, and I was going...

Phil- I sympathize, dude. :) Personally, I don't like Sony. Their quality control isn't that great (in spite of how well they market themselves), and their customer service is just plain terrible. But. They are really the only game in town for some products. MD being one of them. I...

Gee, I similarly, I had a JA20ES for maybe 2 years. Liked it so much, I got the JA555ES' baby brother, the JA333ES. No problems so far. :) I would think that it's a simple fix, in that it's the drawer and not inside electronics, the "heads", or transport or anything. In fact, I think the...
