For the love of movies: The Past, Present, and Future of Cinema and what makes us fans

That was where I checked out on Shang-Chi - the first half of the film was different than the previous MCU movies, but then it wound up having a very generic finale that seemingly came out of nowhere. That’s a film that had completely earned my interest within the first few moments and lost it...

For the love of movies: The Past, Present, and Future of Cinema and what makes us fans

I know I’m quoting the review and not you - but if you’ve been following this series of films, there is a meaningful sense of what each individual main characters’ strengths and weaknesses are and what would be deadly to one person yet survivable for another. It’s just that this is the third...

For the love of movies: The Past, Present, and Future of Cinema and what makes us fans

I would like to humbly suggest that perhaps we take a moment to consider and respect that not everyone wishes, enjoys, or has the time, to consume media (whether that be film, television, music or anything else) in the same way. When we say things to imply that people aren’t watching things in...

I could see that too but I also am in agreement with you. Having enduring popularity doesn’t make something a cult film; it makes it something that has enduring popularity.

I would not consider any of those titles to be cult films. With the exception of Halloween (which itself was well made with good production values and received widespread distribution on release and did incredible box office), and It’s A Wonderful Life (which underperformed initially but is now...

I don’t think so. They’re simply films that are no longer as popular as they once were. All art and entertainment is a product of its time and eventually that time passes. There will always be people who are interested in material from other times, but that interest has shifted from the general...

I agree with this. I think there’s a difference between a mainstream film that’s seen it’s relative popularity decline just from the natural passage of time, vs. films that have cultivated small but dedicated audiences in the years following their release.

Lord and Miller were fired from Solo, as was widely reported at the time, because they were massively insubordinate to their supervisors. They were hired to direct the script written by Lawrence Kasdan, but routinely shot material that was not in his script. They were given repeated...

I agree wholeheartedly. I also think it’s worth noting that in a typical year, Marvel will release 2-3 movies. Surely we can’t blame whatever is unsatisfactory about the entirety of the movie industry on one studio putting out three films.

Absolutely. And there are similarly people who are insisting that Kathleen Kennedy is going to be fired from Lucasfilm any day now… for nearly a decade. When someone doesn’t like something like a TV show or movie, the correct response is…to not watch it. In regards to your earlier comment...

I think that’s exactly it. “Don’t feed the trolls” is always the best course of action and we’d all be better served if more editors and publishers took that to heart.

For the love of movies: The Past, Present, and Future of Cinema and what makes us fans

I think sometimes the world has a tendency to mistake the village idiot for the whole village, to assume the most noxious viewpoints are more representative of public sentiment than they actually are. For all of the internet trolling in regards to Brie Larson, Captain Marvel opened to record...

Cronenberg has been absolutely killing it in a supporting role on Star Trek Discovery the past two years. He’s just fantastic.

I think there may be more to it than that in ways that might not be immediately obvious to most people. For instance: background and extras casting. Let’s say you’ve got a scene set in a crowded restaurant. The director isn’t the one casting those people sitting at all the tables. It usually...

Tarantino’s counting is a pet peeve of mine. He can call Kill Bill one movie, but I had to buy two different tickets in two different years to see it, and each part was eligible for its own awards consideration. It’s still two SKUs if you want to purchase it on physical media or digitally. It’s...
