How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

I agree! I wish the entire film had been done that way. Since it’s all CGI with the actors’ heads pasted in from separate filming sessions anyway, it doesn’t seem like it would have made a difference technically speaking to continue in that fashion.

Gravity is actually a pretty great movie and very impressive technically, it’s just not remotely scientifically accurate. They decided to construct a story first and then figure out the science second, instead of starting with “our story takes place in space, so how would a real space agency try...

The movie is superior to the book. Weir conceded that the dust storm was fictional and not possible with the Martian atmosphere as we know it, but that as a storyteller, he needed an inciting incident to put the crew in jeopardy in such a way that it would be understandable that they’d have to...

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

It’s one of my all time favorites and a rare example of a film being better than the book it was based on.

Regarding Christopher Nolan, there’s one film in his catalog that’s not marketed as sci-fi, but it has a twist ending of sorts that reveals that it is. I love how he pulled it off. Of course, now I can’t mention the film without spoiling it.

I only mildly hated it as opposed to completely loathing it so I think you are right.

Elysium is Neil Blomfkamp first, and a functional movie second. If you liked District 9, you’ll probably like it; if you didn’t like District 9, you probably won’t.

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

I don’t think it’s a lack of understanding issue; it’s an issue of drama. Watching any movie or TV show in an area that you’re well-versed in can be frustrating if you’re expecting an accurate portrayal of what’s going on. Writers by necessity will oversimplify or change how something works in...

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

I enjoy Black Mirror to a limited extent but I often feel the episodes run far too long and that I get out ahead of them before the end. There’s really something to be said for the half hour format that Rod Serling preferred.

Really liked the movie, and then when the end credits rolled, I saw a former boss’ name in a prominent position - he was always a good guy and a pleasure to work for, and I was happy to see him doing well.

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

I think what happened in my case is that my interests growing up were so different than my peers (or at least the ones they’d admit to) that I just didn’t know anyone else who liked Star Trek or 2001 or things like that through much of my childhood. No one in my high school class saw the ‘97...

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

Sure, it’s always been that way. But it was just so much harder for those voices to carry in the mainstream when it would only be a couple people like that in any given location. Now with the power of the internet, they can turn into something of a mob online and disproportionately represent the...

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

I think the rise of social media has made it easier for “gatekeepers” to gather in numbers that you didn’t see before then. By gatekeeper, I mean the kind of person who declares who is and who isn’t a “real fan” and what things are and aren’t acceptable for “real fans” to like. And I find that...

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

Its a shame that some people can’t enjoy a new version of the story that doesn’t play out the same way as the older version. There’s a group of Star Trek fans that will not accept the new films. In that case, the writers were very generous to the fans by creating a scenario where all of the...

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

I rewatched the Battlestar Galactica reboot maybe two years ago and I felt that it held up. It has more episodes per season than a similar show would have today, but I don’t think they’d really cut story, they’d probably just call it seven seasons instead of four. The designs of the ships and...

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

Is “The Expanse” more of a space exploration show, or more of a show about war/human problems that just so happens to be set in space?

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

La Jetee is incredible. I don’t know if I’d say that 12 Monkeys is a remake. I’d probably say more that La Jetee is a seed and 12 Monkeys is the tree that grew. Sorta like how “2001” is inspired by the Arthur Clarke short story “The Sentinel” but is a much larger story in its own right. There...

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

I think saying Star Trek The Motion Picture Director’s Edition is coming to 4K UHD massively over-represents what The Digital Bits said. Bill Hunt is a big Trek fan and he’s lobbying for them to consider it. What he’s said is that the people who make the decisions are slightly more receptive to...

How do you see the state of SF on TV and in Movies?

I like X-Files but I think it hit up against the limits of broadcast at the time, and that ultimately made the show less satisfying for me. I remember that my childhood best friend and I would have sleepovers on most Friday nights and would look forward to the show every week. A few times a...

We’ve gotten one high budget space travel themed movie in the fall for several years running now. A decade ago that would have seemed unimaginable to me.
