    MASH and HD

I think the decline in physical media sales are a bigger obstacle than who owns the show; Fox had their HD masters in use for several years before they sold themselves and declined to put them on disc during that time. One of, if not the, worst selling categories for physical media is TV on...

About the same as they look on an HDTV. Not beautiful, but not unwatchable.

    MASH and HD

Just got the new TV and watched a couple MASH episodes last night from the DVDs. I think we're probably all in agreement that the DVDs never looked great to begin with. I think they were based on older broadcast masters, rather than being new transfers from the original film elements. There's...

They are based on new scans of the original film. Slightly more detail is revealed on the sides, but the top and bottom are also cropped as well. The entire series in HD is on Hulu if you want to sample it before buying from iTunes. The Hulu version does not include the option to listen...

I just ordered my first 4K TV and I’m currently in a MASH DVD binge. When the new TV arrives next week I’ll be able to answer that question.

I’d like it if they did but I’m not optimistic. They just reissued the complete series on DVD at a super cheap price point, I’m guessing just to burn through extra stock. Fox no longer releases Blu-rays for their new shows that were in HD to begin with.

CBS has had a difficult timing selling their classic shows on BD, because they are charging an enormously high price for it, and because they were trickling them out one season at a time. Now, for something like Star Trek: The Next Generation, I was willing to pay about $80 per season for...

So I just noticed that the newer HD versions are also available on Hulu. I've been rewatching the show on disc, so I thought it might be fun to switch over the HD version to check it out. I picked whichever my next episode was (can't remember exactly which one). On the plus side, these are...

Matthew, I'm sorry for your loss. I found the news about Alda to be less depressing than advertised - in large part due to Alda's own feelings on the subject. I appreciate that he was willing to go public with what's understandably private news because he wanted to give hope and reassurance...

The actual end title credit roll has had the "bouncy ending theme" but there have been some where the 15 seconds or so of music that plays at the end of the episode (when it freezes from its final joke and throws up a producer credit) have been a slower, sadder sounding variation.

Ha, I had just mentioned that about the "very special episode" and then the next one I watched was indeed an Alan Alda-written-and-directed one. Many of them seem to end with the "sad MASH" reprise instead of the "70s lounge" version.

I can’t be the first to make this observation, but whenever I see the opening credits end with “written and directed by Alan Alda” I feel like that’s a pretty good sign that we’re in for what they used to call “a very special episode”.

I can say -- about M*A*S*H itself - that I picked up on DVD from where I left off in college. I had watched until about midway through Season 7 as the original DVDs were being released, and then I think I just got ahead of the releases and never went back. Or maybe I had gotten tired of it...

Nope, TNG should not be widescreen. Was never, ever intended for widescreen. It is specifically covered in the documentary bonus features on the Blu-ray set why they didn't reformat. Incidentally, it would not have sold 3x the amount of copies if it was in widescreen. It didn't sell more...

    MASH and HD

I got into MASH when I was in college - the DVDs had started coming out and heading the show without the laugh track changed my perspective on it. (I had seen a few episodes in syndication as a kid but mostly ignored the show.) For whatever reason, I stalled out around season 7. I was recently...
