Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

They would have almost certainly teased it during Star Trek Day too. The promos for Star Trek Day included DS9 and VOY clips and those clips were definitely upscaled from the standard definition masters. They didn’t even take HD clips from the recent documentaries that had snippets of the...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Unfortunately it’s not a trustworthy source and we knocked down that rumor when it first appeared in March. Among other things, it makes zero sense that the effort would be shepherded by Alex Kurtzman’s production company as they’re responsible for producing new content for CBS, not for...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I don’t believe that’s correct. And there is a deleted scene that adds clarity to the idea that Picard will have a new first officer not previously part of the crew.

I never really took it that way, but I can’t argue with that interpretation either.

Not really - he’s hitching a ride to a wedding on the Enterprise and gets pressed into service as a result of being in the right place at the right time.

My attempt to watch it with my wife has stalled out, perhaps permanently. I’ll probably continue on my own at some point. Appreciate the quality of your recaps @Adam Lenhardt and the quality discussion that it’s been generating.

I just fundamentally disagree with you regarding Yar’s death. I will never forget seeing that episode as a kid and it had such an impact on me. Until then, I had never seen a TNG episode where everything didn’t just reset at the end of the episode. No matter how high the stakes, no matter how...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I think I disagree with that. I never want to lose a vital character I enjoy from a show I’m watching. But with that said: senseless death is a part of life. Wrong place, wrong time is a part of life. I would venture to guess that the majority of deaths in life happen in ways that wouldn’t be...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Sam, I respect that but if the next one doesn’t go over, I’m pulling the plug. I know realistically I have one episode of “giving it a try” left and that’s really only on the basis of it being the final episode of the season. She’s not enjoying herself and it’s not worth turning what should be a...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

The next episode in our skip-a-thon will be that episode, if we get to do it. The obstacle I face now (I say tongue in cheek) is that she doesn’t enjoy watching the show, so it always loses in choosing watch to watch on any evening, so we never get any momentum going. We had no problem with the...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Thats what I thought and that’s what I’ve been trying but so far it’s not working. She doesn’t care for any of the main cast - doesn’t dislike anyone but there’s no one she’s taken a liking to either. The Marquis introduction didn’t do anything for her - it was a two part episode that she...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

My wife and I are still stalled at season two. I am not optimistic that I can get her to continue watching this show. It’s not clicking in any way, shape or form for her. I’m a little surprised if only because she enjoyed TNG, all the new Trek shows, and is a big fan of other shows that so...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I would call Discovery’s “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad” a comedy of sorts, dramedy seems right - it’s essentially a standalone episode in terms of plot, but one that deepens character relationships while also having a number of humorous moments both from those relationship moments as well...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I’m finding these early episodes like eating bland vegetables. They’re probably good for us but it’s not particularly enjoyable either. The problem I’m facing is that it’s soooo many vegetables. I don’t know how many more episodes I can convince my wife to watch where she’s completely bored...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

If I remember right, you might want to pickup from the two partner near the end of season 2, The Maquis, or at least those and the season 2 finale. I think those three episodes are needed to set up much of the season 3 story if memory serves. Which...who knows at this point :D

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I’m going through the first season with my wife now and facing that same dilemma. She’s just not enjoying the show all that much, but I know every (very reasonable) criticism she has had pretty much does get fixed. The dilemma is whether watching two seasons worth of stuff that’s going over like...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I compared both the upscaled version on the TOS Blu-ray, and the actual standard def DVD version upscaled via my Oppo, and I was hard pressed to see a difference. I wish I did but I don’t think it matters much which you pick. I did rip both to my HTPC and one day I’ll A/B them to see if the...

I also didn’t do a great job of selling it. “Yeah, the first two years are rough, but by year four, it’s awesome” is not a great sales pitch.

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I’ve been wanting to watch some more Star Trek and just take the ride again. I was hoping to get my wife onboard since she enjoyed TNG, Picard and Discovery but she was very lukewarm on both Enterprise and DS9 and we had stalled out after the first few episodes of each, I think this was last...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Adam, is this your first time watching DS9? I’m really enjoying your thoughts as you work through these episodes. I’m facing a little dilemma because I think I’d like to rewatch some older Trek besides the new stuff that’s currently airing, but DS9 is a long haul and I’ve seen it more recently...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Absolutely. I didn’t mean that it was unlikely that we could revisit some of those characters. What I’m thinking is more likely though is that Starfleet has changed and DS9 isn’t the same place it once was, so that you couldn’t simply do a DS9 Season 8 in this new context, just as Picard is not...

Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

It’ll be interesting to see if a DS9 anything is even possible after “Picard” airs - there’s the potential for that series to update the status quo in a way that makes a return to DS9 as it used to be impossible. It seems like Starfleet is worse for the wear in the time that’s passed.
