Colin, I'd go the DLP or LCOS route instead of CRT for your screen size. The only way you'd be able to use a CRT on that big of a sceen would be to get a 9" CRT, paint your ceiling and walls flat black, and get a high gain screen. Hope to see the pics soon, sounds like everyone had a lot of fun.
In the interest of time I think I should drop my HT off the list as well. Since I host a movie night now and then everyone should eventually get around to seeing it anyway.
I hope to add light control to my loft in the near future in the form of giant drop-down black velvet curtains that will cover the 1.5 missing walls. I'll still get the live-end/dead-end acoustical benefits plus the ability to use the theater during the day. Doing that, however, will necessitate...
1. I'm in for lunch and the tour. But I'm not paying $7 for the world's smallest margarita in a disposable cup. 2. I don't really care. 3. I'm volunteering my theater. I'm in Round Rock for those planning the tour route. A night showing is a requirement for the Miniplex, however, as I have a...
Mike, do you normally watch movies by yourself? If so, and your speakers have decent imaging, you can get by without any center channel at all. Just set your Center speaker setting to Phantom, and voila, problem solved. Of course, if you want new speakers, I can certainly help with that too.
Mike, try it and find out! The general rule of thumb is to keep all three front speakers as close the same height as possible. So, if the height of your L/R speakers is, say, 39" (floor to center of top-most driver), and the height of mounting below the screen is 20", whereas above the screen is...
I'd like to see 28 Days After as well, schedule permiting. I agree with those who said not to be afraid of opening up your HT. The first time I invited everyone over the aspect ratio and convergence were so far off on my Barco that my eyes hurt by the time we finished Dracula. I had a great...
I saw NePlus on AvantGarde's webpage a few months ago and have been meaning to call and schedule and appointment, but never got around to it. Scott, can you give us your impressions of the Duos? How was his room set up?
Dang, I knew I forgot someone, sorry Greg! Scott, didn't mean to dis you, but I thought you were getting out of HT and going strictly two-channel, no? Which brings up an interesting question, what qualifies a system as a home theater?
I'm in agreement with Nils, (A) gets my vote IF we come up with a video portion for the meet as well. I saw instructions on AVS for a DIY 6500K lamp. I think it only cost about $60 in parts.
Okay okay okay! We'll have them done by May 10. The speakers are already built, it's just the crossover we're still tweaking. As Jeff is about to find out, that takes FOREVER. So what about a topic? So far we have: DIY Expo Vinyl vs CD DIY speakers compared to Commercial speakers Here's...
Don't dis the velvet man. Velvet rules. All of my preamp and amp concepts have the inputs and outputs on the sides so that the cables aren't hidden behind the equipment. Why hide the best looking part of your system? It shouldn't be a problem to bring a pair of Mirus speakers. I'll try to...
Hank, I can provide the recording facilities for copying an LP to digital. For analog playback, I only have Mark's Dual CS5000 on hand. It sounds nice, but I don't think we could call it state of the art. Perhaps we could talk Mike DeCock into bringing his VPI Scout? Scott O., have you purchased...
Chances are good I'll be out of town Memorial weekend, so how about 5/17 or 6/7? Aside from getting closer to completing my theater room, I haven't done much DIY stuff lately. I'm still searching for the right amp design, and I've abandoned the DIY turntable for now (too many irons in the fire)...
