Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I wonder if that is available in a downloadable form, without having Quicktime Pro... Incidentally, Aronofsky specifically mentions the commentary does NOT give any explanation of what HE intends the movie to mean, which is a bit disappointing. I don't believe the creator's intent is the only...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Interesting how those who came into this movie with certain preconceptions, and held onto them, have generally been disappointed. Mike, I generally agree with your summation, particularly as in the second post, though I have not taken the past and future section as "real" or any of the story...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

That's exactly what I think of it all. I also tend to agree with what Steve added. Tom plants the seed on Izzi's grave and the tree which grows, as mentioned earlier in the movie by Izzi herself, plus the scene of Tomas becoming "immortal" all builds on this whole "earth to earth, ashes to...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Chris, just in case there was any confusion, I also prefer if Future Tom is just in the book, for the same reasons. Plus, the late scenes where Tom says "bye" to Izzi, plants the seed (a symbolic gesture) and then tells her "everything is OK" all seem to support this.

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Because I see an enormous difference between it taking 500 years of futile striving and agony to reach a realization and it taking a year or two.

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

FWIW, I think it has an enormous effect on the story. In fact, it is incomprehensible to me how someone could recognize the two possibilities and think they made no difference.

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Rich, I think we are basically in agreement. I don't tend to analyze to quite the extent you do. Once I get the basic structure I tend to go more with the overall concept and not get too wrapped up in the details. Still, as I was watching the first time, I was getting the feeling the story was...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

The nice thing about this film is how it is so open to interpretation. However, the reason I ultimately interpret the future as being the novel is because when Izzi first tells Tom she has started on the novel again, she points out that it begins in Spain, but ends at Xibalba. Ultimately, I see...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Actually, the way I interpret it is the past and future portions are the novel, only the present "really" happens. Izzi specifically states early in the film that the novel starts in Spain and ends at Xibalba.

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Rich, I think you misunderstood or I just poorly expressed where I think the source of the end of the novel was, or more accurately, what I consider to be the "end" of the novel. I think Izzi started the future portion of the novel. I take the novel to read in the same order as it is shown in...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Jay, that was my initial interpretation while I was watching the movie the first time, but since then I have come to accept more what Rich spells out. although, I'm not sure if Rich is saying the future portion of the novel is completely Tommy's creation, which it clearly is not. I take Izzi's...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I have to say, somehting about "Aronofsky," "Sci-Fi" and "Epic" in the same sentence makes me nervous. I'll keep my fingers crossed. I'm curious if this is an original story, or if it is based on something else. It makes me think of both Vonnegutt and Heinlein.
