Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

Both the 7140 and the 5000 seem like real bargains. Prices for this stuff have gone up pretty rapidly. I got most of my Emotiva gear long enough ago that those price hikes hadn't hit yet. I think my XPA-5 was $640. Since most of my speakers are 4 ohm, that's five channels of 300 WPC, all...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

@Robert Crawford one of the main things I like about having good amps is, I don't have to limit my speaker choices. My surround system has always had difficult speakers. Low impedance and low sensitivity. When I choose speakers, I don't have to worry about whether my amps will have difficulty...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

I would do it. Then you can use the 5000 to power Atmos, with one channel left over, and use the 7140 for the mains and traditional surrounds. When I started into Atmos, I considered the 5000, but in the end I already have Emotiva the rest of the way around and decided to just go with them for...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

The 5000 seems to be pretty similar to the 7140. Just a little less power and five channels instead of seven. I wonder why they discontinued the 7140, because now all their amps other than the 5000 appear to be well over $2K. The 5000 is a real bargain.

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

Glad to help, Ron. I kind of exaggerated how much work it would be, but I don't know how accessible the back of your equipment is. You would have to change the channel configuration in your receiver to direct the front three channels, and probably the side surrounds to the 5000, swap around...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

Ron, it would take a lot of work, and it's unfortunate it wasn't set up that way originally. I'm not going to really push you to make the change after it's already all set up. As far as the 5000, no, it's not a major amp, but one intended to compete power and cost wise with a good receiver...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

Ron, first there's the elements of an amp that don't show up in the specs. The attack, dynamics and control a better amp can provide, with the same power rating. The biggest one, though, is hidden in plain sight, and nobody pays any attention to it. One says "Two channels driven" while the...

Good luck with that, Dave. :D I gave up on that suggestion with both Ron and Sam.

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

Ron, I expect @Dave Upton would also recommend using the Outlaw to power the main channels, especially the front three, instead of having the receiver power them and having the Outlaw power Atmos, which I suspect is what you mean by "additional channels". I have a feeling you'll fight me on...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

My understanding is the object oriented concept of Atmos means the number of output channels is only limited by the decoding. You might notice, when you look at the on-screen info when playing back Atmos, it doesn't show a finite number of source channels like with other surround formats. It...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

So, @John Dirk do you have an assessment of the difference in Atmos with the speakers overhead, rather than high and to the sides?

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

I was planning on the RSLs as well, but now ELAC has Debut series in-ceiling models available, so I think I'll go that way, since I plan to switch to all Debuts for surrounds as well.

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

I would definitely try that. I've finally decided to go proper 7.1.4. I had pretty much decided to change all my surround speakers to ELAC, probably Debut B6.2s. I would prefer Uni-Fi UB5s, but the front ports on the Debut v.2 have a logistical benefit, except the speakers are significantly...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that overhead, in-ceiling speakers are a significant improvement over front and side height speakers for Atmos. In fact, it seems kind of obvious to me that there's a huge difference. @John Dirk give Sicario a try too. Besides, it's a awesome movie. If...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

BTW, I have looked at the page on Dolby's site and even they aren't very specific, and there doesn't seem to be much consistency between diagrams on the same page. Different diagrams show them at radically different angles from the main viewing position.

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

Is there any kind of consensus regarding placement of in-ceiling speakers for Atmos? The first suggestions I'd seen were for them to be roughly at 45 degree angles from the main listening position, forward and back, then I saw updated recs for a lesser angle. It seems that you'd probably want...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

Two things. You need LED bulbs that are specified to be dimmable. I have found that regular AC LEDs don't dim as far as incandescents, but far lower than half. If you really want to dim them a long way, then you're better off using low voltage LEDs with a transformer and dimming them after...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

That hasn't been my experience, but I have accent lights for when movies are being played. These lights are always turned off when anything is playing. I just want the overhead lights to be dimmable, which they never have been before.

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

In the words of Charlton Heston... "Damn You! Damn you all to hell!" I'm more than 3/4 of the way there, cost wise, for a fully implemented, ideal 7.1.4 setup. I even have the CL2 speaker wire and a solid plan for how to wire and install in-ceiling speakers myself. I can't swing the KEF...

Dolby Atmos: Determined At All Costs

I'm intrigued by the high(er) end class D amps that are showing up these days. Unfortunately, they aren't in my near future, but I'd sure love to give one of them a try. I had remained skeptical, but my eyes were really opened when I found out even PS Audio has come out with some. How much...
