I haven't been following this thread for quite a while and haven't bought any hirez discs in a long time, plus most of the stuff I do get is classical, but some classic rock stuff I've gotten from HD Tracks that I've been especially impressed with are Chicago Transit Authority, Supertramp's...
I just want to add that with a lifetime (definitely over 30 years worth) of experience with photography, going from film to digital, I actually have a pretty deep understanding of the dynamics and differences between resolution and bits, or pixels with photography. Digital audio involves...
That's where your misunderstanding is coming from. The original Telarc recordings on SACD are NOT in unaltered Soundstream on SACD, they just haven't been downsampled. They have been converted (and upsample to DSD64) but their resolution remains at the original 16/50, because you really can't...
I own an online business, and I don't recall ever having a parcel say it was delivered when it hadn't been yet, so I don't know what Amazon is talking about. I think they just made it up. It isn't exactly uncommon for a delivery to be made to the wrong address, though. Especially in...
Paul,
I don't know why this is such an issue for you. Maybe I should have said "upsampling", but the bitrate from those original Telarc recordings IS increased on SACD, plain and simple. Regardless of the terminology you want to use, the bit rate is significantly higher than the original...
Paul, no Blu-Rays for me yet. I just haven't delved into them. Once I started getting HDTracks downloads, I like the idea of being able to play them however I want, with whatever DAC I want. The DC-1 is such an excellent DAC, especially fore the price, I hesitate to buy anything I can't use...
For anyone curious about the tech stuff, I'm extremely happy with my HR playback, especially for downloads. For music I use an Emotiva XSP-1 analog pre-amp going balanced to an Emotiva XPA-2 amp and Thiel CS 3.6 speakers. SACD is played with a Marantz SA8004 and downloads are played from a HD...
If you want to discuss High Res Mahler, I have an embarrassing amount of it. I have full or nearly full HR cycles by Zander/Philharmonia, Tilson Thomas/San Fran & Gergiev/London, plus some individual ones from Slatkin/St. Louis (and 6-7 more cycles on CD), plus a fair amount of Tchaikovsky...
Mike, I tend to doubt that you'll ever hear any difference between DSD and a similar bitrate of FLAC with a good playback system. I have a ton of SACDs, which I play with a Marantz SA8004, a player that's not exactly a slouch, and it still doesn't sound quite as good as a 96/24 FLAC played back...
I finally broke down and got a Marantz SA8004 SACD player. The Pioneer 59AVi I have been using sounds surprisingly good, but I'd like a less analytical sound. Here's hoping the Marantz Does the trick
Anyone interested in the London SO Beethoven Symphony cycle, Amazon UK has it for a pretty unbelievable price. Even if you order just that, it is less than $30 delivered. That's a 6 disc SACD set. Mine was shipped today.

They also have a nice...
That had me confused for a minute, but you are right. The DVD version of the albums is just a 5.1 mix, not DVD-A. Only the SACD boxes had actual high res.
I have an unopened SACD box to sell. I'm at work and I can't recall if it is the first or second. It won't sell for $30, but I can check when I get home to see if anyone is interested.
Edit: I think I was wrong. I'm pretty sure it is the '83-'98 box. I'll get back when I am sure. I...
Paul, I mentioned the CD set simply because it costs less than most of the individual DVD-As and is even half the price of some. I see it as a good way to test the waters before spending so much on the DVD-As.
Regarding the Solti set, this is a great example of how close-minded and...
You can get the Barenboim set on CD from amazon.co.uk for about $25 shipped. If you like LvB "Big" I like the 70s Solti set. People seem to either love it or hate it.
hdmi has absolutely nothing to do with the sound quality. It comes down to the A/D conversion and everything else down the line. There are ways to produce considerably better two channel music audio than virtually any receiver on the market is capable of.
Recently I've been working on...
What is required for BR audio? I am hoping it is possible to just "play" it on a good two channel analog system. As in, if I have a BR player aimed at audio like the Oppo BDP-95 and use the stereo analog outputs, I can just pop in the disc and listen, like with SACD. I think I will probably...
Blair,
I won't tell you how cheap I got Security used on Amazon marketplace. I do have the remastered PG 1-3 and thought they were a significant improvement over the ones I already had, which are the original releases pressed in Germany in the mid 80s.
BTW, I had a real hassle on my...
I'm wondering who here has done any serious comparing of different SACD players. I have a Pioneer 59AVi and have realized it seems like a pretty darn good music player, especially for the $175 I paid on ebay. Still, I wonder about improvements such as the upcoming Oppo BD95 or the Marantz...
Blair, I have unfortunately spent more than you. I can't even say what I've gotten the last few months.
I did pick up Security a few months back. I'm not sure how much it can benefit from SACD, being such an early digital recording, but I figure it will sound as good as it possibly can.
I got Elton John's self titled album a week or so ago. It is the only EJ I didn't have on SACD, and it does not sound good. It seems to be noise reduced to death. Impressive for a few seconds, but downright annoying after that.
Added another MTT Mahler, the 5th Symphony.
Finally got the Norah Jones used, Clapton- 461 Ocean, Dylan- Blood on the Tracks, ordered the Zander Mahler 3rd from Deep Discount. We'll see if they actually ship it.
Thanks for the info Paul. I spent way too much on music earlier this year, so any change I make will have to be staged a bit. I would probably get a 5 channel amp to go along with the one I have now. Then, probably not until next year, get a pre-pro. Until then, I would keep the Pioneer...
