re: SILVER RIVER
The Archive edition seems to be the same transfer as the old one that runs on TCM. Both have window boxed credits and the bad sound is in both. The new Archive edition, however, is much worse in the soundtrack. It is much more apparent and the problems seems more pronounced...
I thought I heard the delay in SILVER RIVER was there was a slightly longer cut for England and they were trying to get that. But, yes, the new release has, in places, the worst sound of any Archive title I have and I have several hundred. I suspect this came from a fine grain that has a faulty...
I see ADVENTURES OF MARK TWAIN is listed in the new releases. Seeing this was one of the first Archive titles released, is this a remaster or new transfer? I wouldn't think a new cover would qualify for new release. If it is a new master, I am in for it.
Warner Archive used to send a birthday email the month of my birthday for a nice sale, but so far, this month, nothing.
I am pretty well caught up with older released titles I want, but I have about 10 more recent titles ready to buy when a good sale comes along. They are newer titles that don't...
I wish someday we could get the Paramount BULLDOG DRUMMOND series with John Howard (and Ray Milland in the initial entry). They are moody and fast moving. I have them from DVD or VHS and they all have the Paramount logos removed and look just okay, at best. They must of been sold off for...
Essentially true, although I believe Paramount still owns what's left of their silent films, and a handful of sound films that were sold off for remakes Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, 1931, and I think they kept Sturges' THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK probably because of their later remake with Jerry...
Gosh, what a hassle. Got my 5 films in the shopping cart, and once I sign in and enter that credit card code, things come to a stop. It took about 1 hour to go through all the pages to pick the 5, but now I am stuck at checkout. It is frustrating because I don't want to order these things twice...
Thanks Alan. That is probably it. Even though, before putting in the code, the prices were $16.99 per film, which is not too bad, but that additional 20% would be very sweet.
I received an email from TCM Archives about 20% off if you use MEMORIALDAY as the coupon name. So I put into my cart the 6 new Selznick Archive releases, but when I enter the code and click, a box comes on saying either "not for these titles" or "code is not good" or something to that effect...
Some good stuff coming in March:
Diplomaniacs (1933) - Bert Wheeler, Robert Woolsey, Marjorie White, Phyllis Barry, Louis Calhern
Kentucky Kernels (1934) - Bert Wheeler, Robert Woolsey, Mary Carlisle, George 'Spanky' McFarland, Noah Beery
On Again Off Again (1937) - Bert Wheeler, Robert Woolsey...
Concerning my post (a couple of posts up), I must say that Warner's is right on top of things and have always made things right in the few instances of a problem. This morning I had an email from George Feltenstein explaining a brief problem the site had and it has been fixed and I have been...
Yesterday I ordered several Archive titles that I have on my "to buy" list when I have a coupon or they have a discount. Well, they seemed to have quite a few 25% off.
PT 109
Juarez (1939)
Sisters, The (1938)
Phantom Of Hollywood (1974/TV)
Death of a Scoundrel
Goodbye, My Lady
They...
I would like to throw in my two-cents and suggest a Radio Pictures early thirties set of thrillers like the Warner set (The Smiling Ghost, etc.) the Archives put out a few months ago. Hopefully they could be re-mastered.
1. THIRTEEN WOMEN (1932) The TCM version only runs 59 minutes, and...
I have bought many TCM Archive titles. Off the top of my head, I would like to see these remastered:
BAD RONALD
THE ADVENTURES OF MARK TWAIN
ROUGHLY SPEAKING
FOUR DAUGHTERS
Actually for the last title, I wish they would bundle all three together. (FOUR DAUGHTERS, FOUR WIVES and...
I am happy for all the 50s sci-fi and horror films making it to the Archives. I have a ton ordered, but they haven't been shipped yet, but a poster (reviewer) on Amazon posted a rather alarming warning about THE CYCLOPS...
...Why in the world would Warner Bros. issue a cut print of this...
Just received the Bette Davis A STOLEN LIFE today. One thing, it is a big upgrade from the TCM one I put on DVDr a couple of years ago. It looks fantastic. Have only skipped through, but the old transfer had a bad splice in a scene, and that is gone. It looks like a new transfer to me, but maybe...
The remaster for BACKGROUND TO DANGER is superb. Both picture and sound are excellent. Maybe not quite the cleanup a pressed disc would be, but going back to the original negative certainly makes it so much better than the older, TCM transfer.
I am still hoping THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS will make it to a pressed DVD. After seeing the upgraded sound and picture of the recent Flynn Wartime Set, just reminds me how wonderful these films can look and sound. I had the Flynn films on DVDr from TCM broadcasts, and what a treat to see them...
Well, I hope THE WINDOW gets at least a retransfer for its Archive release. The transfer on TCM is not very good with a lack of sharpness with flat looking black and white.
Just my speculation, but since TCM is going HD in many areas, I wonder if these anamorphic transfers and even the new telecines for older titles are primarly done and paid for by TCM and we Archives buyers are able to access these improvments as an "extra" revenue stream.
I know it probably won't happen with already released Archive titles, but I really wish Warners would go back and remaster ADVENTURES OF MARK TWAIN, BAD RONALD and ROUGHLY SPEAKING. I would glady double dip for these.
Although my birthday is in October, I used the June birthday code (XB610) and got FIVE STAR FINAL and TWO ON A GUILLOTINE for an additional $3.99 off per film. If figured they owed me this as I am still waiting for them to fix the NIGHT THE BRIDGE FELL DOWN so I can see the last 14 minutes of...
I wonder if anyone here has received the Irwin Allen THE NIGHT THE BRIDGE FELL DOWN 2-disc title.
It worked great (and a great transfer for a TV movie) until the second disc at around 1 hour, 24+ minute mark. It froze up and I couldn't get any further...frustrating because it is a 3 hour movie...
Gosh...I hope NORTHERN PURSUIT and UNCERTAIN GLORY will be part of a FLYNN AT WAR pressed and restored DVD set. Along with DESPERATE JOURNEY and EDGE OF DARKNESS, this would complete the WW2 Flynn films. And I think they would have decent sales.
Thanks greylocke5.
Well, I do belong to the Insider's Club and took every poll and questionaire I could to get a discount here and there. Even got a discount in my birthday month. $20 per title is a bit too much for me, so I make a separate list of things I want and keep it on my computer. I...
