That's pretty much what I do. I also assign distinctive SSID's for my 2G and 5G networks for the same reason. My OCD mandates that I know which AP a mobile device is connected to at any time. Crazy? Possibly. This would be only one more in a long list of examples of that for me...
Your use case is pretty straightforward so you might indeed be better off just disabling the 5Ghz network. I use mine mainly in the master bedroom where I have a proximal AP.
No need for powerful routers if they're going to be used as AP's. I have 4 distributed AP's throughout my home and the...
That's more or less true but I leave it disabled for a couple of reasons.
IPv6 adds no practical performance increase at this point but enabling any additional protocol does add some degree of extra processing for the network stack. It's likely negligible so no harm done on that front.
The...
Duh... I remember seeing that post from you. What was I thinking.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the performance boost a contemporary solution affords.
@DaveF - Given your preferences this might be of interest. It's a subscription-based, managed approach that includes built-in support for WiFi 6 and even the emerging Matter [Smart Home] platform. Please understand I am not endorsing this solution as I would consider it overall too costly and...
It was directed at the general turn I felt the thread was taking, not any individual. Sorry if it came across otherwise.
Want to know a dirty little secret? You don't have to be to buy most items online. Some items will say "Member Only" on their product pages. Aside from those, most can be...
Oh I completely agree and had originally picked an Asus model but decided the one Costco has would probably be sufficient for @JohnRice 's actual needs. Costco does periodically offer Asus routers but it's usually online only and for limited periods. There's one sitting in my local Costco now...
I love intelligent discussion as much as the next guy but ultimately, "to each his own" is my philosophy. Who am I to tell anyone how to spend their hard-earned dollars unless they specifically seek my advice.
In this case I would ask, "what's your budget and what are your expectations." If...
I believe the speed cap you are referring to is on the 2.4Ghz band. The 5Ghz band is capable of theoretical speeds up to 3.5 Ghz. Of course real world speeds will be much less dependent on any number of factors.
This may help

That's it!!! I'm officially changing my HTF name to "Wirecutter" for the sole purpose of gaining influence over @DaveF . I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner.
Well said, Josh. You have a wonderful knack for boiling things down in simple terms. The marketing outlets want to convince everyone that an expensive Mesh system is their best option but in truth, many don't need these systems. I no longer recommend Netgear products for the reasons mentioned...
I'd definitely start there. As to patching your existing network vs starting fresh, I would definitely recommend the latter, especially in your case as Apple is no longer a player in this arena.
In the consumer space I really don't see great differences between the major players. It seems to...
If that is the case then I would just disable the routers wifi radio and place a wired AP in a better [proximal] location.
I would recommend doing this every week or so at a minimum. You can use simple smart plugs to automate the process. Many newer devices have this functionality built right...
Some initial observations...
You're probably not doing yourself any favors with the placement of the main router. Ceiling level placement is optimal in open spaces but placing it where there will be obstructions between it and every single device is likely reducing signal strength.
