iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

I've never been one for brand loyalty myself, especially when that loyalty begins to become one-sided and taken for granted. Similarly, the whole ecosystem concept is totally lost on me. Now if I were in your particular situation I might replace my system and let my wife continue to use the...

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

Wow! You could buy 3 comparably equipped PC's for that price. Also, if this were a PC you could likely easily repair it. Sorry. I know this is not exactly helpful but just sayin....

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

Too much MAC specific terminology for me to be sure what's going on but this does not sound like a hardware problem and so should be recoverable. The problem is, you really should let an Apple support professional restore it at this point and that's just not an easy thing to accomplish these...

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

Yea, that's an important lesson. I've made that mistake more times than I care to disclose. ;)

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

Certainly possible. Could also just be a bad patch. I'm really scratching my head with MAC reliability, something I never knew was an issue before this thread.

That sounds like a separate issue, which is what I think you're also saying. The random crashes seem to have stopped, correct?

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

I never intended to turn this into a MAC vs PC discussion. Sorry if it came across that way. That said, what you're experiencing seems different to me in that Dave's issue is almost certainly the fault of Apple's Catalina OS, whereas yours might very well be attributable to 3rd party software.

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

If the problem is truly gone now then this is fairly categorized as an OS bug and a very basic one at that. I am truly astonished Apple hasn't fixed it as they must be aware by now. Personally, I think they've become too "diverse" for their own good.

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

Sleep setting are irrelevant with SSD's as they require no constant power anyway. Storage in general has decreased in cost to the point of commodity status. I use cloud storage in conjunction with redundant local storage for critical data and standalone USB drives for my periodic overall...

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

I would think the option below that one is of greater concern. The option you've checked appears to only control whether or not the computer automatically sleeps when the display does.

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

In a normally functioning system of course not, however, in this case it may be needed to properly isolate the issue. That would be my next step anyway after disabling the sleep function, assuming that does not fix it.

I don't know the history there but possibly. I was thinking more of companies like Disney and Microsoft, just to name a couple.

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

In post #5, Dave suggests that this behavior likely started "through a couple of updates," which I assumed to be minor patches as opposed to the major OS upgrade to Catalina. Also, you most certainly could fall back to Windows 7 after installing Windows 10. Happens all the time in the...

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

Well, in all fairness, this is not unique to Apple. Once those who willed and dreamed a company into existence with their vision, dedication and sweat, pass it on to garden variety CEO's this is all but certain.

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

Yea, that was pretty basic advice from Apple. Looking over the original error message again, it appears the system is attempting to write to the GPU and fails to set the proper state prior to initiating its write cycle. One of the first tenets of troubleshooting is to carefully consider what...

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

Warranty or not, I would take this into an Apple store. They should at least be willing to take a look and rule out the OS as the culprit. Alternatively, is it feasible in the MAC world to downgrade to the previous OS for test purposes?

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

Exactly. It would be odd for memory to fail in the manner you've described. It really does sound like software not playing well with the memory for whatever reason.

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

The log file you posted earlier strongly suggests an issue with the graphics subsystem but it could be more what the system is doing at the time of the crashes than the actual hardware. Again, I'm not a MAC guy but Windows PC's have a feature called Safe Mode which allows you to boot up using...

iMac crashes at least weekly, thoughts?

Dave. I'm not a MAC guy but I would agree it's related to video RAM based on this message. According to this it should be user replaceable.
