It's interesting that after last year's Oscars we talked about how no BP winner had won more than 6 Oscars since Slumdog Millionaire in 2008 (and @MartinP. had mentioned how the Academy was "spreading the wealth" in recent years). Now we've had 2 BP winners win a total of 7 in consecutive years.
I may not be the target audience for Billie Eilish’s music but I like a few of her songs, including No Time To Die.
I appreciate that she writes her own music (with Finneas). And she employs some different styles.
The "5 previous acting winners" segments can get a bit saccharine, but I enjoy seeing former winners on stage.
I suppose effusive praise is better than Nic Cage saying, "Ready for the big ride, baby?" ;)
It looked like RDJ just grabbed the Oscar from KHQ and ignored him, going over to Tim Robbins first, then a fistbump with Sam Rockwell.
I'd like to think RDJ could have shaken KHQ's hand first, since KHQ handed the statuette to him, but I'd also like to believe that RDJ was so excited in the...
Good point about Villeneuve having already directed serious dramas. Spielberg had also directed The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun before he won. My point is that these directors would not win Best Director for a genre or sci-film. Does that mean Villeneuve, who I (and many) think is one of...
I think Best Song didn’t have a recap either.
I think there should have been a reminder of the BP nominees, at least, given it’s the top award of the night and there are 10 of them.
It turned out to be one of the most anti-climactic announcements for BP winner. Even the audience was a little...
Nolan (and Oppenheimer) winning continues the trend where acclaimed directors of acclaimed “genre” (typically sci-fi) films don’t win Oscars until they tackle a serious drama.
Examples:
Spielberg: Schindler’s List (after such films as Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. And...
Agreed that most winners were expected to win (though I wasn’t sure about the pre-Oscars chat regarding Animated Film).
I may be in the minority, but I do like the Oscars and some other awards shows. SAG awards are my second favourite followed by Critics Choice, then Golden Globes.
Could The Boy and the Heron have been considered an upset, or at least a surprise? Across the Spiderverse was very well-regarded when it was released.
I haven’t seen TBATH, but my sons have seen both. Both didn’t mind TBATH winning, but one said it’s the type of film that the Academy usually...
While I do think that What Was I Made For by Billie Eilish is a pretty good song, it is the more conventional type of Oscar song winner, ie. more serious or solemn. Yes, I’m Just Ken has a semi-serious tone, but it’s really more of a comedic song, as evidenced by the performance at the ceremony...
I recall the Oscar ceremonies from the 90s and 2000s having segments that would highlight practitioners like the stunt performers or some interesting film history. I think they went away because they caused the shows’ runtimes to balloon (which I understand, but as a film fan I still enjoyed...
For those looking for last minute catch-up viewing (like me!) on streaming services, the latest to drop:
Poor Things is on Disney+/Hulu (US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand)
Anatomy of a Fall is on Amazon Prime Video (Canada)
American Fiction is on Amazon (UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand...
As someone of Asian background, I appreciate the increased representation of “minority” groups in Hollywood films over the last 20 years or so. Of course, “minority” is in reference to Hollywood films, given its history where predominantly white actors have been cast (even in non-white roles...
For sure. I bring this example up because this could have been an example of "virtue-signaling", and the odds were favourable (3/5 nominees), but turned out not to be.
This is an anecdote only... but I would have voted for Stephanie Hsu for Best Supporting Actress over Jamie Lee Curtis. I love Jamie Lee's work and thought she was quite good in EEAAO, but IMO Hsu was better.
I highlight this anecdote because it it's a recent instance of the Academy not...
Just watched the Film Independent Spirit Awards on YouTube (I'm a sucker for awards shows!), and it was interesting to see that DaVine Joy Randolph won for Best Supporting Performance (no surprise), but Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti weren't even nominated in their respective categories...
Not film-related, but the big surprise for me at the SAGs was Pedro winning Best Actor in a Drama series! Not because he wasn’t good, but because the Succession actors had won many of the other awards.
For sure - if another film wins International this year rather than Zone Of Interest, given it’s nom’d for BP, then I’m sure some industry folks (and fans) will call the process into question.
Speaking of International - I know it’s a new title for what was previously Foreign Language, but does...
Here is a bit of Oscars trivia that I've been fascinated about.
Philadelphia (1993), starring Tom Hanks, is (I believe) the last film to feature 2 actors who have won consecutive acting Oscars (Jason Robards is the other actor in the cast). (It's OK if the actor won their 2nd Oscar later.)...
A film nom'd for International and BP should win the International award, based on the notion that International is a subset of all films eligible for BP. Unless there are 2 or more films with the same 2 noms, of course, in which case one of them should win International.
But from my...
Which constitutes more (thought provoking, non-franchise) sci-if films than most directors. Spielberg and Villeneuve would belong in this group.
EDIT: it’d be interesting if Opps wins Best picture and Best Director for Nolan, as it would reflect what Cameron achieved with Titanic - ie., after a...
