The old DVD of Rambling Rose is widescreen and has a lot of special features including a Martha Coolidge commentary. It's from Pioneer.
The new version coming from Artisan appears to be bare-bones and full-frame, which is the same thing they did to Trees Lounge. Yuck.
Please add John Cassavetes' Opening Night to the MAR list.
I taped a letterboxed version off IFC and I just looked into buying it on DVD and the it's listed as 4:3 everywhere.
The Sure Thing was never released on DVD.
That title, and Valley Girl, were both supposed to come out on Polygram in early 1999. However, the company folded before either of these titles were released.
Sometimes these titles show up in databases as having been on DVD, but it never happened...
Mark--
Sorry for pointing out the info, not trying to be "US-centric". It's just a fact that the US DVD studios are bigger here, and a film like Heavenly Creatures has not yet gotten an official release here. The official release will likely be OAR.
I had heard that Canada has quite a few...
As an FYI, Heavenly Creatures is a R1 disc but is only available in Canada. I'm pretty sure once this is officially released in the States that Buena Vista will put out a nice widescreen disc.
I beleive there are quite a few Canada exclusive, but P&S only, titles out there, such as Lost...
I just thought of another one, which is the wrong aspect ratio despite the disc being "widescreen":
Playing By Heart
is cropped from 2:20:1 to 1:85:1. The opening credits are correct and then it is cropped.
Just remembered a few more:
Fierce Creatures
Fluke
Not sure of the OAR on these, but these DVDs are full-frame and I suspect P&S or matting:
Amazon Women on the Moon
Metroland
