Thanks Jonathan, when I made the original comment based off of "LDS Bookstore", to me that implied a bookstore owned and operated by the church like the ZCMI stores (dunno if those are still around, what can I say I read a lot of Great Brain books as a kid).

Glenn, I'm positive you're right. Notice how many locations are in Utah, a state with about an 85%+ Mormon population. And I'm sure that this store is renting Cleanflicks discs/tapes. Seems to me that they're trying to squeeze as much cash as possible as quickly as possible before they get...

Well, the Mormon church can certainly afford a lawsuit if it comes to that, probably much more than CleanFlicks, MovieMask or the ilk

Filtering works by blocking the frequencies that the human voice usually occupies. No matter what it's definately second best to a real disc. Make that third best

Karaoke CDs are more expensive because it's a much smaller market, and it's licensed, just like what Criterion does. Also usually the karaoke studio has a 3rd party re-record the song to keep their fees down You won't find any pro karaoke people stripping vocals, it's strictly a home thing...

Matt, clubs have to keep records of the songs that are covered in their clubs and pony up licensing fees every few months. This would include people sampling. As for the filtering, are people doing this for profit, or in their own homes privately?

The DGA can sue because their memebers are being falsly represented as the authors of the work that's being rented out, when in fact it has been butchered. Clean Flicks is violating the law, thye are not protected by fair use. They're screwed

Exactly, it's what I've been saying all along They are going after them BECAUSE THEY ARE GENERATING REVENUE from this, it is no longer fair use

You go Matthew :) The only problem with software like MovieMask, is that it doesn't alter the film stored on disc. it alters the frames AFTER they leave the medium. So per the Game Genie (Nintendo vs Galoob) case in the 80's, this is fine and dandy. Frankly, most of MM's "masks" make no sense...

Glenn, it doesn't alter the point that 1-They are violating the DMCA to do so, a federal offense 2-They are creating a derivative work, for which they pay NO LICENSING FEE TO THE COPYRIGHT OWNER, and are doing so WITHOUT PERMISSION FOR PROFIT This is a gross violation of their rights. TV...

The studios provide all "clean" edits to TV and the airlines. In face my mother would LOVE a TV cut of Shakespeare in Love to show her class. They won't let her show the whole thing for obvious reasons

MovieMask will likely live on, per the GameGenie descision since it does NOT alter the original content on the product However, the rest of them are going down ;) I can't wait :)
