I Love a Mystery - Mystery TV Shows

Three Pines (2022) Amazon Prime An eight-part adaptation of author Louise Penny's series of Canadian mysteries, following gentle, humane Armand Gamache (Alfred Molina), Chief Inspector of the Surete du Quebec, as he and his team investigate assorted murders, mostly in the quirky little hamlet...

I Love a Mystery - Mystery TV Shows

Somebody turned on the cheesecake Bat-signal? Nice New Tricks review, Marv! I like that show, too...though like you and Russ, I much prefer the early years and original line-up. And frankly, I think Amanda Redman looked better in her '40s and '50s than she does in those younger...

I Love a Mystery - Mystery TV Shows

Nice overview, Marv! This is another case where the books are much better than the resulting series (author Gladys Mitchell wrote a whopping 66 Mrs. Bradley novels!) That said, the first movie-length episode, "Speedy Death," is a pretty good adaptation. I don't think the move to one-hour...

I Love a Mystery - Mystery TV Shows

Just in case there's any confusion, Marv...Randall and Hopkirk is My Partner the Ghost. The latter was the name the show went by when it aired in the States. Wish Timeless (or somebody) could've released City Detective on DVD. I really enjoy Rod Cameron's subsequent series, State Trooper and...

Hmm. for some reason, that photo and Burt's look just didn't say Dan August to me. Whiffed that one. Should have known Toma, but am not sure that I've even heard of Jigsaw John! Fun quiz, Marv!

D'oh! Serves me right for not watching Elementary! ;) I also should have read your clue for #8 more carefully (that's a rookie mistake right there.) Thanks for the fun brain puzzler, Bob!

I Love a Mystery - Mystery TV Shows

Yes, tough quiz, Bob! I can answer a few of these, I think (promise no cheating!) 1. I believe the answer to this one is Douglas Wilmer. 2. Hmm...guessing here: Ian Richardson. 3. Wanda Ventham, who is Benedict Cumberbatch's mum. 4. Jeremy Brett 5. Ronald Howard 6. Roger Moore (The TV movie...

I Love a Mystery - Mystery TV Shows

Yes, it's true. That's why I'm surprised they left Rockford off the list...as that's a show that is very highly regarded across the Pond. BTW, have you seen Scott & Bailey? It's a good show, and I recommend it, but it doesn't deserve to be on a Top 25 list IMO.

I Love a Mystery - Mystery TV Shows

That's a pretty comprehensive list, Marv. As is the way with all these kinds of lists, there are things I'd take off (Cagney & Lacey, for one) and replace with my preferences (Campion, Touching Evil)...but overall, most of the big guns that should be on such a list are there. That said: I love...

I Love a Mystery - Mystery TV Shows

Miss Marple (BBC version) From 1984 to 1992, Joan Hickson put the definitive stamp on Agatha Christie's spinster sleuth, in a series of twelve wonderful BBC adaptations of the Miss Marple novels, all featuring beautiful location filming, terrific casting and witty scripts which “open up” the...

I Love a Mystery - Mystery TV Shows

Hey there, Marv and Matt! While I haven't been posting, I've been reading along and enjoying your conversation...and of course, watching some mysteries - mainly catching up with S1 of Dark Winds, last year's successful adaptation of Tony Hillerman's series featuring Navaho policemen Joe Leaphorn...

I Love a Mystery - Mystery TV Shows

Maybe not a bunch, but a few more recommended mystery series that I overlooked in my initial post: Lord Peter Wimsey (both the Ian Carmichael and Edward Petherbridge versions are well worth watching) Campion (starring Peter Davison as Margery Allingham's detective) Heat of the Sun (more of a...

I Love a Mystery - Mystery TV Shows

Hey Marv! As you well know, my preference for TV mysteries runs to the British variety...although I do very much like the short-lived Jim Hutton Ellery Queen series, as well as Columbo, Banacek, McMillan & Wife, etc. But for my money, the Brits do the classic mystery thing the best. Off the top...
