Wow, been a while since I've posted in this thread. Can't keep up with you guys here. ;) Will definitely be ramping up my movie viewing come October, though, with the next October "Scary Movie Challenge."
Here are the handful of films I've watched over the past couple of months:
Mystery Road...
I picked this one up in the sale too (along with Beat the Devil - big Bogie fan here) and am looking forward to checking it out soon. Agreed that it's a beautifully shot film.
Some recent viewings over the past couple of weeks:
Captain Newman, M.D. (1963)
Enjoyed this first-time viewing, especially the dramatic elements, which are far more effective than the comic bits involving Tony Curtis (though Curtis has one pretty hair-raising scene where he has to get a knife...
Oh, yeah...the babe quotient in this series ups considerably once Tom Conway takes over as the Falcon. :) The Falcon and the Co-Eds is one of my favorites in the whole series. Good atmosphere.
For about the 25th time, I watched Hatari!, IMO one of the best "hang out" movies ever made. I love it beyond all reason, despite its meandering nature...in fact, I love it because of its meandering nature! Warner's Blu-Ray doesn't look so hot projected on a 120" screen, but looks fine on my 50"...
The Great Train Robbery was a fun lark (and the big action set piece on the train near the end is very impressive), but my first-time viewing of Hell on Frisco Bay really knocked my socks off. Terrific movie, and a terrific Blu-Ray transfer. And man, did old Edward G. play the king of all louses...
After a long time focusing almost exclusively on classic TV content, I've finally gotten back into the swing of movie watching. Viewed the following over the past two weeks:
As you can see, I've been on a bit of a John Wayne kick. Ice Cold in Alex was a first-time watch for me, and I...
Been watching way too much TV and not enough films. I did watch one movie this past week, though: Edge of Eternity (1959). It's a terrific little mystery thriller from director Don Siegel, featuring the dual natural wonders of the Grand Canyon and stunning redhead Victoria Shaw. The Twilight...
Good to hear your DVD of Across the Pacific played without issues, Robin! Unfortunately, mine is one of those with problems, and refuses to load...the only disc I had any problems with in that Bogart set.
Watched a few more rental titles last week:
The Equalizer 2
Saw this in the theater when it first came out, but wanted to see it again. A solid sequel to the first film.
Toy Story 4
The wife and I enjoyed the heck out of this one. Pixar does it again. Lots of fun new...
The Best of Cinerama (1963) Great, extras-laden Blu-Ray from Flicker Alley. As with all the Cinerama travelogues, there are some dry spots here and there in the film, but also lots of impressive stuff as well...and you can feel the love and care lavished on restoring this piece of cinema history...
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
OK, the movie is overlong, the plot ridiculous, and the dysfunctional family elements of the story all kinds of dumb... but, man, did the monster action in this puppy deliver! Worth a rental for kaiju fans, anyway.
It's there on the poster, John, in two different places: Comes a Horseman (1978).
*Edited to add* - Oops! It was on the poster...but apparently the image no longer is showing up. Mea culpa. This was the movie poster that I tried to link to in my previous post. Sometimes Google Images doesn't...
Comes a Horseman (1978)
Very good movie, beautifully shot. The Twilight Time disc comes with a warning about imperfect video quality, but I thought the film looked just fine projected on my 120" screen, not reference quality but very nice. Glad they went ahead and released this fine modern (WWII...
I admire your ambition. Don't think I could handle too many Bowery Boys flicks in a row...
Finally got around to seeing the following at the theater...Good fun!
I've loved this film ever since viewing it on the one o'clock movie back when I was a teenager. A really special little film...sure wish it would get a decent home video release.
Merry Christmas, Marv, and to everyone else here at the HTF!
Have only been able to squeeze in one Christmas-type movie this year, but it was a good 'un:
Gorgeously shot, this just might be John Ford's best-looking film. Strong performances from the leads, and a moving story.
Watched this film for the first time last year and liked it (Fred MacMurray especially is on good form), though perhaps not enough to make it an annual tradition. White Christmas, on the other hand, has become an annual tradition and I'll be watching that one shortly. If possible, and work...
Well, Robin, I can't agree with your distaste for the Bond films, but I do agree that Operation Crossbow plays like one in many respects, and is a fine film to boot.
I rather enjoyed this one, though I agree it's no classic. I thought it was a competent 50s adventure pic, but then, I'm partial to this type of underwater treasure-hunting story. As you say, some impressive 3D effects, and of course, Joanne Dru. The only sour note for me was the patently fake...
Nice to see you, Marv! How's the home theater holding up?
Really hope we see The Abyss on Blu-Ray and/or 4K soon.
Been a while since I've posted in this thread, but I'm always interested in seeing what you guys have been watching. Here are a few flicks that I've checked out over the past month...
Wasn't planning to watch this one again tonight (for the fourth or fifth time), but as it was on one of the Japanese cable movie channels, and my wife hadn't seen it, it was an easy decision. Hands down my favorite of the Mission: Impossible franchise, really superb action / spy stuff that IMO...
